my 15 week old GSD dog is tottaly obsessed with licking peoples faces.
he will tottaly go out of his way to do it and if you dont let him he whines and whimpers.
i have tried to distract him from wanting to do it and made sure i dont get low enougth for him to be able to do it. however my little daugter is his main target. he dosnt do anythign else to her, just licks her face all the time. its got to a point now that he knows i am going to tell him to stop it so he runs over to her quickly licks her face and runs back to his bed before i have a chance to tell him no.
why do dogs lick faces? and will he grow out of it?
i have had a puppy before a collie x GSD bitch and she stopped doing it by 16 weeks.

He'll probably grow out of it, but it depends on the personalilty of the dog - lower ranking dogs do it to higher ranking dogs as a sign of subservience.
Can you train him to perform an alternative behaviour - such as having his tummy tickled, as this is also a submissive behaviour and is also impossible to do while licking a humans face. All he needs to know is just what you *do* want him to do,in the mean time, he'll make up his own rules according to his instinctive behaviour.
when i let him out in to the living room or when he is around my little girl i ask him to sit, and he rolls on to his back and shows me his belly. so i stroke it for him and then when i stop it is them when he decided to jump up and lick my face.
thinking about what you said about personalities and submissive behaviour. could it be that he feels low ranking and is scared?

I doubt he's feeling scared, but he may just be a naturally low ranking, or even a natural 'omega' (as opposed to alpha) dog.
I once read that dogs lick your face to abstract information about you, the same as when they sniff another dog's rear end. I have to be honest and say I actually let my puppy do it because I can always go and wash my face when she's finished. She does do it more when she's pleased to see you, for example when I get home from work because she's not seen me for 8 hours and has only had OH to play with :0) but she also does it after I've had a bath or a shower, which can be a bit annoying, but it's probably because she can smell a different smell on me.

Your GSD seems like a very intelligent and wanting to please, affectionate dog, as in your other thread. Kisses are totally normal , i've never heard of obssessive kissing :D.

akita pups lick your face because they want you to be sick so they can eat it i dont know if all pups do that.
I also have an obsessive licker - though its not just confined to the face, if I wear a small top my shoulders (if I bend down) get soaked

Haha , is this true?

Yes, all pups do this - even wolf cubs! ;) It's to make the adults regurgitate food for the pups while they're still too young to go hunting. It's a submissive gesture - the subordinate, even when adult, will do this to the superior.

Oh , i thought she said the dogs lick ur face because they want to eat you when you become ill and weak!

My top Spanish is the main face licker in my household, she especially loves to do it when you are in the middle of a conversation and the tongue goes right down :d I don't know whether it's a family trait as her son's the same and does it to all my friends, he actually adores people and one of her 2 week old pups seems very licky too?
Our staffie is a nightmare for licking. It would be death by licking with him and its not just the face, its anywhere flesh is showing. Our Rottie starts to lick our face, but then she likes to gently bite our chin.
