On meeting a former neighbour I was telling her that I've just got a new puppy westie and said his name was robbie. I got a nice reaction being why get another dog you can make a fortune breeding from them. Firstly Bailey has been castrated and second they are just pets never to be bred from. I have had this reaction from a few people why do people just see £££ signs. I love my 2 boys and although puppy looks great wouldn't breed from him for any money it just makes me sad that some folk don't care about the animals only what they produce.

you will meet these kind of people everywhere. They are in abundance. It is very sad, but unfortunately not much you can do about it. Kind of opens your eyes up to the personality of the person though doesnt it?

I know what you mean Bailey :(

Recently met up with some friends and on hearing about our pup they informed us that they have a relative who breeds commercially :( (their words, they aren't pet owners) because she can make loads of money while at home with her hyperactive, disabled child :( :(  They just didn't understand at all how breeding done properly will cost heaps of money, take a full 3-4 months of your time, didn't understand how the right tests were necessary and by the time you're all done there's very little to spare - if any :(  and you still have to find the right forever homes for the pups and be prepared to take back and rehome a percentage of them.
My tongue's half bitten thru :(

Hi Bailey i get the same not from my neighbours as my neighbours know me better with the time and effort i put into my dogs, but my friends are constantly asking when one of my bitches will be having another litter(both are spayed now) and when my youngest will be used as a stud he never will as he is first and foremost a pet and much loved member of the family and secondly i would somehow feel responsible for any litter he produced.Where do people get the idea because you have a good dog it gives you a license to make money from them.

I once got told by a very arrogant man who rang up for one of my puppies that I only showed dogs so I could make them into champions to make more money from the puppies.  I think it must have cost around £5000 to get Tigger made up so I would love to know how I was going to make more money.  And all her puppies go for the same money as her mums ones who is not a show dog.

I agree, I have a litter at them mo and people say ooohh you are going to make a fortune.... "ummm nope not when you think the amount of time effort and money that has already gone into this litter........

I hope people reading this and wating a litter (to make a few £££) will realise it is not all it is cut out to be.....

I have been asked 3 times in the last 6 months, is your dog available for stud? I tell them no way, he is a rescue from Battersea, no papers, no health tests, not a good example of the breed show dog wise. They say, but he's really stunning looking and has got a great temperament, that's all that matters isn't it? It's unbelieveable that ppl really think that is all that is important. I mean, yes it is important, but so is everything else. Especially in BC's, which are the second most rehomed breed in this country. :(

While we're talkig about selfish people and Im so sorry to hijack! But what about people who continue to take sick dogs to Shows and classes and to mix n the park!!!

I have 3 dogs with Kennel Cough and they arent leaving the house until they are well, wish the owner of the dog who infected mine thought less of the money in their pocket and more of the dogs and others health!

A dog could be infected with Kennel cough for up to a eek before showing any signs of coughing. It could be that they simply didn't know. When one of mine had kc I took one of the othres to flyball as he was fine. Fortunately for everybody one of our club is a vet and I checked with her before I brought him in. She said he could well be contagious but not showing signs as yet. As it turned out neither of the other ever did get it bit after that I kept them all isolated from direct contact with other dogs.

That is a little harsh as dogs can be infectiopus before there are nay noticeable symptoms.  I have had dogs with Kennel Cough in the past that had such slight symptoms that had I not known what to look for would have not even noticed.  Many pet owners don't reaclise that slight clearing of the throat first thing in the monring when the dogs are greeting you excitedly could be the start of or very mild Kennel cough.

A lot of dogs came donw iwht Kennel cough after our breeds club show in April.  We were sharing the hall with a  gundog club.  Now no-one recalls hearing any dog cough in our half of the hall.

Thats quite an odd reply I agree Bailey! If I had seen you with 2 westies I would have just cried with jealousy of you having 2 westies rather than 1. Lucky you!
