thank you for your reply, i tried what you suggested with sassy and took her some food to her bed, she was quite happy for me to be with her but still wary on wether i would touch the pups, i'm waiting on my son to come and take her for a little walk while i check the pups and put clean bedding for them. again thank you very much for your help,  sassy's mam

You're very welcome :)

You say you took food to her bed, does Sassy have her pups in her normal bed?  If so she may appreciate some arrangement to protect the sides and some sort of cover  (a strong cardboard box with a fleecy blanket fixed over the top and hanging a bit in front works well, or you could fix cardboard sides and top to a wire pen ) to make it more den like.  Of course she may not want anything changed now but if she seems to hover over the pups protectively this may help her feel more secure.

Hope this helps

i meant to have said i took her food and put it by her bed, she was happy for me to smooth her and come out to eat. i did prepare a whelping box for her but she took an instant dislike to it even tho on 1 or 2 occasions she would go and lie there even up until she went into labour, but as soon as she started to push she got back into her own bed which is big enough for her and the pups but on hindsight maybe i should have removed it from the room. this morning she has let me sit beside her smoothing her while she fed the babies and is quite happy. i have to be honest she is a brilliant mother i had set myself up for 2 weeks of sleepless nights which is what i had with my spaniel on both of her litters, but with sassy she just gets on with things almost as if she had been to parent classes *lol* i'm still sleeping in the room with her tho' and get a sloppy kiss to wake me up so that i can prepare her breakfast. can i ask you another question tho', with my spaniel i was advised to give her lactol puppy formula as it would help with extra protein and vitamins while she was feeding, is it still used for feeding mothers? thank you again for all your help

Welcome to the forum Sassymum :D :D

Sounds like you have a wonderful mum there with her pups :)

If she's happy the way things are then I'd leave it, no point in fixing something that isn't broke :)
Like you I slept in the room with mum and pups - until they left  I didn't sleep at all in my own bed and was happier just being near them and on hand to let mum out to the garden in the wee small hours :)  I don't know how I got any sleep, all I wanted to do was watch them feed and grow and be cleaned :)

Re. the Lactol, some people give it, some don't, its personal choice really.  It would be good for her to have a puppy food tho while she's feeding the pups so that she has more calories available for feeding them, and you could gradually increase the amount she gets, dividing it into about 4 meals a day (if she wants it ;) )  and as much water as she wants :)

Hope everything stays well with your girl and her babies
Regards
Dill
