What is the difference between champion and open shows please

Lorraine
- By Brainless [gb] Date 17.06.02 23:58 UTC
If your breed doesn't have CCs there none, except the expense and being benched!

Seriously at Open shows you cannot win CCs, which you need to make your dog a Champion. On the other hand most dogs are not destined to be champions so what the heck it is a lot cheaper, you get to meet lots more different dogs as the Open shows are smaller.

If you want much competiton in the numerically smaller breeds, to gauge the quality of your dog, then Championship shows it is!

Depending on their strength in numbers and registrations each breed has a certain number of sets (one for dog and one for bitch) of CCs a year. In my breed we have 18 sets. Some popular breeds have double that number!

Lorraine ...there is no such thing as a dumb question , only a question you dont know the answer to ;)

I have found that here , on Champdogs , the vast majority of people will answer any question about anything if you ask nicely

its at championship shows that you qualify your dog for crufts, if theyre good enough, by winning a first second or third in the qualifying classes--the only way you can do this at an open show is to win either best in show or best puppy in show!!!
- By LorraineB [gb] Date 18.06.02 20:48 UTC
Thank you all - will try the opens for now I think !

To qualify for crufts here you must win the ticket and it has to be a major.
Those who dont win the greenstar usually go to the north of Ireland for a placing so that they can enter .
I do not understand this as it is the same show we are all going to ,
so why I wonder is it a rule for cc winners only from Ireland and place winners from england and the north of Ireland get to enter.. Mari
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 19.06.02 05:53 UTC
Because in Ireland you are competing under Irish Kennel Club rules and in N. Ireland under British Kennel Club Rules. It is the same for UK exhibitors, does not matter how well they may be placed when showing in your beautifull country, it's a 5 point Green star or we still have to win the place under the British KC rules. Think yourself lucky if you lived in any other area of Europe not only would you need the wins but a pet passport as well. Crufts in a private show run by the KC and they make their own rules some of which may not make too much sense but thats up to them and nothing to do with dog exhibitors in the UK, we would not mind you coming with a 4 point star honist. :) :) JH

You can come to any other Championship Show - some of which are more fun that Crufts - well I think so anyway - try LKA
- By Kerioak Date 19.06.02 07:56 UTC
Or another view: At open shows you can stand around the ring, chat to people and watch the judging, at Championship shows you have to stay on the bench and watch your dog!

- By Jackie H [gb] Date 19.06.02 13:10 UTC
We are talking qualifing for Crufts here Christine, I know you can do it by winning BIS but most of us would not chose that route. JH
- By Brainless [gb] Date 19.06.02 13:55 UTC
I know of one dog that qualified for Crufts by winning RBIS at an Open show, before he had ever been to a Champ show. I would think though that any dog winning a high award like this at an Open show would normally qualify at a Champ show by placing first to third in the required classes!
- By Naomi [gb] Date 19.06.02 14:23 UTC
Just like the Thug.....first ever show and won BPIS
- By SaraW [gb] Date 19.06.02 14:28 UTC
which was wonderful but it was an exemption show - not an open :)

Sara

edited - not meant to sound scathing in anyway Melody - just the fact they're talking about qualifying for Crufts
- By Naomi [gb] Date 19.06.02 14:43 UTC
My mistake, thought that it was an open show :(
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 19.06.02 15:21 UTC
I wish :D

lol
- By Zoebeveridge [gb] Date 11.11.02 09:38 UTC
exemption show??
- By Brainless [gb] Date 19.06.02 13:52 UTC
LKA and the Houndshow are my Favourite Champ shows. My favourite Champ show where we are classified without CCs is South Wales, such a relaxed atmosphere and surroundings, maybe it is something to do with the site being owned by horse people, LOL!

My favourite open show is the Evesham summer show, at three counties showground. It is the day folowing National Working and Pastoral Breeds Champ show, so we get the benefit of some benching being left up for exhibitors use, nice rings, and more trade stands than average!
- By issysmum [gb] Date 19.06.02 14:03 UTC
Is that the Open Show on July 21st (Evesham and District Canine Society)? If so, we'll be there!!!!

Great, come and find me, I will have two Elkhounds with me! All the elkhound people know each other, so you can't go wrong!
- By SaraW [gb] Date 19.06.02 14:34 UTC
lol - got visions of Fiona asking other elkhound owners which ones Brainless and getting a slap for her trouble :D
- By Brainless [gb] Date 19.06.02 14:41 UTC
They know me that well, that they would assume it was me!!! LOL

Anyway I am Barbara if you aren't that brave!
- By issysmum [gb] Date 19.06.02 14:37 UTC
Great, I'll come and find you. We're last in ring 9 so I'll be able to come and watch you in the Main ring. We're entered in Puppy Cocker and the Pupppy stakes, unless of course Holly wins the Cocker Puppy in which case we won't be in the stakes so we can be eligible for Best Puppy in Show - have I got that right??

The puppy that 3 friends and I own is coming out of Quarantine on Thursday 18th, so he is entered. He probably won't be in a fit mental state to be shown so soon, but will be there for socialisation, and ifr he is up to it will go in the ring.

Treena who he will live with will play it by ear! If he is shown he will be in the Puppy Stakes too!

We have been teaching him to stand and trot etc, but of course, having not been outside of his prison since he was 9 weeks old, never having walked on grass, until he comes out we don't know how he will react to anything!

I have sent you two pictures of me with showing one of the dogs!
- By mari [ie] Date 19.06.02 18:36 UTC
Hi Jackie I do intend all going well to take Berry to a show in england , Thank you for letting me be welcome with 4 pointer :)lol I have tons of 4 pointers , but thankfully I did qualify my bullies to enter . I forgot to mention if you do qualify them they are qualified for life so at least if you miss out you can go another time . I do not like the benching system it would drive me mad not being able to chat and have a laugh around the ring . I like the easy going way . Mari
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 19.06.02 19:00 UTC
I belive that you can pull your cars around the ring which must be smashing, as you no doubt know we are not encouraged at championship show to have the dogs around the ring except when they are being shown, that makes benches the only option unless you are going to leave them in the car, which in summer in not on. However in our breed someone is always around so you can leave the dogs on the bench without worry, to shop or visit the bar, so its not all bad. Hope if you do come over you have a enjoyable and succesfull time. If you have not tried it LKA really does have a special feel about it. Jackie H
- By dizzy [gb] Date 19.06.02 19:11 UTC
mari--the sharpei folk all [most] use cages, so they can be left safely on the bench, we all watch out for anything strange, i cage mine and hang a towel over the front so the dog gets some peace-other than that they can find themselves pestered a lot with folk having a good look at them up close. --if i go off i padlock the front of it, , i couldnt be sitting on my bench all day ,id feel like id missed the show :D---forgot to say. lka isnt a qualifier for the sharpei, if you where thinking of coming to a champshow with berry, either the club champshow,--buba or wkc would be ideal, they all have cc's on and are down that end of the uk,
- By LorraineB [gb] Date 19.06.02 21:34 UTC
God, now I feel really left out ! does benching mean you have to sit on a bench all day with your dog ? or do you have to leave the dog on the bench all day ? or if you have not got a crate do you have to tie the dog to the bench ? and Linda which one is WKA ??? help, help, help

P S Marie, we have holiday flats so if you come over you can always stay !

Bemused Lorraine
- By Brainless [gb] Date 20.06.02 01:04 UTC
It means your dog has to be on its bench all day, except for no longer than 15 minutes (might be 10) in order to be excersised, or while it is shown.

In practice most people go for a walk around the show with the dogs if they wish! the dog is attached to a ring on the bench by a benching chain. this is a chain with trigger hooks both ends, and rings at intervals along it's length to adjust the length.

Benches are a god send if you are showing singlehanded, and have more than one dog entered! I find Open shows a big problem for me when there is nowhere in the hall to tether the dogs. I can't take crates to shows, as not driving rely on lifts from other exhibitors or public transport!
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 20.06.02 06:13 UTC
LKA is the Ladies Kennel Association Show which takes place in early December and is a bit like the dog show world's Christmas Party. It takes place at the NEC and until a few years ago we used to set up buffet tables but the NEC stopped that so now every most people take a box of food or a bottle or both and we all exhange cards. Could not go last year and it cost a fortune to send cards far more than going would have. And yes if you have more than one dog at a show benches are wonderfull, I do use a cage but at most open shows they are always in someones way so I try not to take them, would rather use the car if the weather is suitable. Hi - can you tell me when the LKA is this year? I am hoping to show my Dobe pup as she will be 6 months in early December and I have been told that it's a nice enviroment to show in.
Thanks :)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 21.06.02 09:51 UTC
It is at the NEC, and being the last big show before Christmas has a great atmosphere. Everyone gives out their Christmas cards and shares food and wine. In years gone by Buffet tables used to be set up by exhibitors around the benches, but the NEC banned that, so now everyone takes tupperware boxes and shares goodies!
- By Salem [us] Date 21.06.02 09:56 UTC
Thanks brainless - Do you happen to know the date or has it not been set yet? Also how do I apply to show there?
- By Leigh [gb] Date 21.06.02 12:34 UTC
LKA

Friday 13th  December 2002 ~ Hounds,Gundogs,Terriers.
Saturday 14th December ~ Working,Pastoral,Utility & Toy.
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 21.06.02 16:50 UTC
Barbara you and I have almost identical posts about LKA. Salem, Leigh has given you the dates and the scheduals should be out August/Sept. there will be an add in the dog papers but if you don't have them keep an eye on the Higham press site or ask on here during Sept. and someone will let you know how to get one. Or I supose you could phone the Secretary and ask that a schedule be sent to you when they are available, she is Miss M Churchill, 0143383 2944. JH

- By LorraineB [gb] Date 23.06.02 21:36 UTC
Wahey Linda, theres chance for Annie yet then - might give Birmingham a try for her, have got to say she is looking very nice, coat to die for at the minute albeit containing yellow patches still, apparantly pups at Birmingham nowhere near as nice ( told by second party I add) I could do with a proper handler though, once round the ring and I ll be out of puff and dying for a fag ! The Xmas show sounds nice, will you be going ?

Lorraine
- By dizzy [gb] Date 23.06.02 22:09 UTC
or it might of been reserve best puppy, however it was a run off between 2 so had to be one or the other, do you get the dog papers, theres a picture in this week of a winning white akita, i saw some of the TOP people in the breed spraying around theyre akitas hock just before going in the ring, it took all stains and strange colours away, its not allowed but happens,-------if you want it send me your address privatley and ill post you the picture, its just in black and white, but its still a white akita :D-oh and yes all being well ill be doing buba, its for utility breeds only-yes akitas are utility
- By LorraineB [gb] Date 23.06.02 22:21 UTC
Linda, emailed address to you, have been scrounging 'Our dog' at ringcraft classes, will hopefully get to meet you at Xmas then, took youngest Rottie to ringcraft last week (2 years old ) and person in charge says she is most natural show dog she has seen so will maybe get her out soon as must adtmit she moves for England, but to me is alittle on small side

thanks
Lorraine
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 24.06.02 06:48 UTC
Lorraine, know nothing about Rotties but as an interested onlooker would say that they have been getting smaller over the last few years, particulaly the bitches, and as a result the movement and fronts seems to have improved. Please Rotti people don't jump on me, I have said interested not knowlegable, I am happy to be corrected. JH
- By LorraineB [gb] Date 24.06.02 15:16 UTC
Thanks Jackie, my two rottie bitches are chalk and cheese but Lily (mentioned above) is like a little power house, will try to get her out and see what happens !!
