Topic Dog Boards / General / Sould We Have Her Spayed?
- By sharonb [gb] Date 01.08.05 14:14 UTC
My Akita is 8 years old. In her last few seasons she as seemed down and goes off her food. The last season (3months ago) she seamed worse than usual, not just during her season but about 6 weeks leading upto it.
She was under the vet and she lost about 4kg.
After her season she soon picked up and is now in very good health. I personaly think the best thing would be to have her spayed. Id hate to see her so ill again when it could be avoided.
The vet agrees it is a good idea. Is it wise for a dog her age to go a opperation? What are your views on this.
If I go ahead with this I will be having her done at the start of September.

My Golden bitch was spayed aged 8. She'd been having odd seasons, and once she was spayed they found she was actually on the verge of pyometra, so it was lucky we did. She's fine now. :)

Yes Goldmali this is what frightens me. I lost a dog to this years ago. It was a very very bad way to go and I dont ever want to witness this deadly thing again.

My dog had several operations late in life and im talking 13 / 14 years old and she was fine - she wasnt spayed then but one was the removal of a large benign tumour - first thing she did when she got home was stand by the food cupboard

My Sully had vaginal prolapse in June so had to have an operation for that then 2 days later as it came down again had to be emergency spayed, she is 7 years old.

Hi Sharon,

If she's otherwise in good health and back to a good weight come September, I'd have her neutered if she were mine.  I know it will be a worry for you but I've known a few bitches (thank God so far none of my own) who've developed pyo following a few strange seasons :(

Good luck, Teri :)
