I have read your forum all through Sassy's pregnancy ( she is a jack russel ), I am pleased to say that everything went well at the birth and she is now the proud mother of 6 babies. The problem I have is that even tho' she allowed me to help during and straight after birth now when i go near her bed she growls to keep away, I can sit and watch but that is all. When she is out of her bed she is still the lovable girl she always was its only when she is with her babies. Its a few years now since I have had a litter and that was a spaniel who let me check her and her babies everyday. Sassy's babies were born 3 days ago, would be grateful for any comments on how to go about this
thanks Sassy's mam

While she is growling at you I would respect her need for privacy and go no closer than she will aloow ;) when she's around ;) ;) Try taking her into the garden to toilet and leaving her there, or on a lead with someone (shut the door tho) While she's attending to the call of nature you can quickly weigh and record the pups and check them over, change the bedding, wipe around the bed (wet wipes are good for this) etc. then when you're finished let mum back in and pretend like you haven't been near ;) I would also go as near as she would let me and put her food down - so she knows you aren't trying to steal her pups, that way she'll learn to trust you with them ;) ;)
Hope this helps
