Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Question about JW
- By charly [gb] Date 29.07.05 09:49 UTC
Am a bit confused about something on the Claim for JW form from the KC.  Can you help?  It says

(3) One point for the award of BOB at an Open Show.  Only to be claimed if no JW points were gained by that dog winning a Breed Class or Classes.

Does this mean that if there are say only 2 dogs in your class and you got a 1st  (so not applicable to claim a point ), but by beating other 1st placed dogs in other classes, say in PG or Open for BOB you get a point?  And what if you were the only dog that turned up, would you still get a point?  Sorry to be confusing, but could somebody explain?

If you won your class but there were only 2 in it you wouldn't get a point. However, if you then  got BOB as long as ther are 3 dogs of your breed present alltogether (including you) then you would get a point.

If you won your class with 3 in it and got a point and then got BOB you wouldn't get another point.

Hope this helps,

Emma

Thanks Emma, I get the picture now.

Does anyone else think they should change the rules? My boy missed his JW by 3 points, but if they counted BOB as another class beating at least 2 other dogs, which effectively it is, he would have had about 8 more points!!! I think that's really unfair.

If you got BOB and beat at least two other dogs you would get a point for that, providing you didn't get any other points.

Do you mean you, for instance, won Open but were the only dog in the class, then got BOB over the PG winner which was a class of two, and you want a point for the PG class though you weren't in it, and a point for BOB?
- By LucyD [gb] Date 29.07.05 20:18 UTC
No, I mean that my dog won various junior or graduate classes with more than 3 dogs in them, which we got points for, and then beat the other class winners, of which there were more than 2, to get BOB, so I think the rules should be changed so that the Breed Challenge is treated like another class and you should get a point for winning it if there were more than 3 dogs in the Challenge. :-)

Im having a nightmare getting open show points, there are never enough puppys entered.  Last week for instance we were the only puppy so we won best puppy then went on to get puppy G4 beating loads of other puppies but we still didnt get a point which IMO is unfair :(

At least it is easier now.  My champion girl ended up wioth 32 points but didn't have the 10 points needed in Open show classes (we only had 6, though more than 10 classes won, but not enough dogs).

I got the JW with her daughter, but only out of Junior and Post Graduate classes, as there were not enough pups around, even though she won nearly all her classes and BP (so beating more than 3 dogs) at Championship shows (she won a Puppy stakes heat overall and got a Ch show puppy Group place).

In the end I had points to spare, but she didn't get her first point until East of England last year, when she had turned 6 months a few days before Crufts.

We did Tiggers with two days to spare nearly all her points were gained at champ shows as she was in the ring at opens with massive dogs with made her look tiny!  Molly got hers mainly at opens as there were 26 puppies doing the champ show circuit at the time and she get bored easily.   In the end she got her last points on the same day she got her RCC so got a stud book number anyway.  :)

My lad missed his by 3 points - never the entries at open shows.  The day after he turned 18 months he won 3 classes at an open show with 3 in each class and the week after he won a class at a champ show - typical!

My boy missed his JW by 3 points, like most of the replies, he won lots of classes at opens, but there werent the number of dogs needed. I had people saying to me has he got his JW yet - and I was like No !!! My youngster whom I bred by my dog that missed his JW has just turned six months, and guess what he has won a BPIB, shame though as he was the only puppy in the breed !!! I think Im going to get that a lot, so I dont think my puppy is going to get his JW either.
I knew this was going to happen, as at the time that I mated my bitch, there were no litters about, as lots of bitches had missed.

Mildred seems fated to hardly ever get JW points - she has beated 3/4/5 pugs frequently, but cant claim the points as we were all in AVNSC!  I have brought her Father back out to show, to keep up the numbers at openb shows, but that back Fired as he has got BOB twice.  Still, we do have 5 months to go, and she is doing very nicely towards her Sh CM

My problem was partly that as he was my first dog I hadn't been bitten by the 'bug' and only took him to about 4 shows as a puppy. So 21 out of the 22 points he did get were in the 6 months between him being 12-18 months. I wasted half the JW period just because I'd never heard of it - aargh!!
- By ChristineW Date 29.07.05 22:57 UTC
Mia won her JW when it was the hard way of winning a minimum of 10 open show points and no points to be claimed from 2 shows in 1 weekend.    Now it's easy peasy with only 3 points from open shows.!   Mia had her's by the time she was 15 months old and this was the year shows were cancelled due to F&M so she may well have had her's earlier.

Curtis missed his by 3 points as the girls came into season when he needed his final points & he had to go on his holidays!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 29.07.05 23:43 UTC
Yes it was foot and mouth yer that I still needed 4 Open show classes with 3 in class,a dn loads of shows we had entered were cancelled.  I suppose 5CCs (and her title) that year was some compensation :D
- By ChristineW Date 30.07.05 08:31 UTC
Mia has won her title too no it's deciding whether to try to drop the 'Sh.' part or go for the ShCM? ;)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 30.07.05 10:10 UTC
Do both.

I don't go to manh Open shiows so neither of my girls ahve more than about ahlf dozen or 10 points, but ahve the group ones shoudl I ever get the number of points needed.
- By thomas-the-spot [gb] Date 30.07.05 09:10 UTC
Snap Lucy.  Tigger actually did hers in about 6 months in reality.  She had about 4 points up until that point.
- By LucyD [gb] Date 30.07.05 17:26 UTC
Almost snap because we didn't get ours!! Still, he has a CC, 2 Firsts at Crufts, and a ShCM, so I shouldn't complain!!! :-)
- By STARRYEYES Date 30.07.05 17:40 UTC
being new to the show ring and pleading ignorance .....what is JW and where do I begin!!!
- By LucyD [gb] Date 30.07.05 18:43 UTC
Aha, now you're asking! Basically it stands for Junior Warrant, and if your dog is awarded one he can have JW after his name in catalogues etc. You get it by gaining 25 points between the dog being 6 months and 18 months old, of which (I think) 3 have to be at open shows and 3 at champ shows, the rest can be at either type of show. You get 1 point for a First in a breed class at open shows, and 3 points for a First at a championship show, as long as there are 3 dogs in the class. If there were less than 3 dogs in the class you do not get a point, but if you then get BOB and there were 3 dogs in the challenge you do get a point. However if you already go tthe point in the class, you do not get another one for BOB (grr!). Confusing I know! :-)

Thanks for the info Lucy .

T-T-S  -  I didnt realise you could pick up all of your points at champ shows, I thought you had to do at least 3 open shows

edit to say - sorry just noticed the "nearly" bit in your post :D
- By ClaireyS Date 31.07.05 22:57 UTC
what do you need to get for the show certificate of merit ?
- By LucyD [gb] Date 01.08.05 07:40 UTC
There's some answers to that question on the 'another JW question' thread. :-)
