I have a very handsome pedigree dog called Marley. He was 1 on 8th July 05. I would like any info on where to start him being studded. He is KC registered and has good downline of champions. We also have a brindle bitch called Milley and she is only 7 months old. Too early to breed yet.  She is 10 days into her first season and this is all new to me. Any info would be welcomed. I live in Andover Hants, not that this really matters!!
Thanks in anticipation

Hi Neil, welcome to Champdogs :)

The best advice on this subject is at the top of the 'Breeding' page.

As Dawn says this post is very good food for thought when considering this.  It will also give you some pointers in deciding if your bitch is appropriate to be bred from come the time, meantime, if you haven't already done so, you need to start strictly separating them.............around about yesterday :) if this is new to you she may be further into her season than you think.

Hi thanks for the quick reply. Fortunately thay both have their own cages and we have been keeping an eye on him since her season began.Fingers crossed he didnt get there without us noticing!!!!We noted her first bleeding on the 21st July. What cost implications are there for hip scoring and eye tests? I feel he comes from a good bloodline and would be an ideal candidate for stud.

I would say £2-300 to cover health tests.
It is important to keep your two separate at all times now, even when you are there as it can take very little time indeed to effect a tie and then they cannot safely be separated which would mean an injection for your bitch to prevent the pregnancy continuing which starts her season all over again........
You say you "feel" he would be an ideal candidate for breeding but really it takes lots of experience to know that, you really need to either show him and see how he does under several judges or at the very least consult someone experienced in the breed for at least one opinion.  The way that breeding works is bitch owners choose their studs, generally from the show ring, so if you are not out there they will not really be considering you.  If you don't show and just advertise some other way it is probably fair to say you will receive mostly enquiries from equally inexperienced people who very often will own bitches not up to the mark that may even have been turned down by responsible stud dog owners therefore you really have to consider do you want your dog's genes to be perpetuated in rather low grade litters that are maybe placed without care in inappropriate homes.  The only way to avoid this is to have your dog properly assessed before continuing further with any studding plans.
