My puppy had a microhip inserted on March of 2005, at the same he was neutered at the vet. His been having problems with a gagging, breathing, chocking, and coughing symthoms. Recently for the past three weeks he was diagnosed with antibiotics for 10 days believing that it might be the kennel cough. The antibiotics did not completely help, he still makes those unpleasant noises. Radiology were done yesterday July 28th, 2005 at the same vet, and was told that the chip is positioned in his throat. Most likely this is what causing it to cough, heavy breathing and overall disconfort with a tickling sensation. He has to go through surgery to have it removed, a one inch incision will be made on his neck to remove the foreighn material.
I have been doing my research and found that the chips are not reliable since they move to different areas of the animals body. I contacted the manufacturer of the chip and was told that is not the microchip fault, I also called called the vet to reconfirmed who was the person that insatalled the chip on my pet, since there are assistant doctors working with the doctors at every vets' office. The doctor was the one that inserted the chip, I questioned her that if the chip was inserted incorrectly, I was told no. The vet and the manufacturers vet discussed these situation over the phone today July 29th, 2005, and the manufacturer of the microchip company agreed to pay a reasonable amount to have my pet go under surgery.
I'm seeking legal advise since these chips are not confident, the manufacturer of the chip is called HOME AGAIN, and the distributor name is Schring Plough Health. Overall from my research the microchip distributors are the responsible ones. Has your pet been microchiped, do you know where the chip is on your pet, has these happened to your pet or similar incident? It is good to take legal action now so you don't go through the same ordeal of surgeries. email me at detectiveclaudia@bellsouth.net

All i can say is bloody hell hopefully this is the small minority and good luck to your boy in the future.

Can't find the chip on one of my dogs, although I've not had her x-rayed to find it.

Holding regular eye testing sessions I was asked by a company doing the microchipping if I would allow dogs to be scanned. I said yes. Aprofessional chipper came along with their scanner and of the owners present with chipped dogs only two had the chip found in the right place, three the chip had moved and in two the chip had disappeared totally!
Needless to say I am not impressed with chips. My dogs are DNA identified at the KC and tattooed. DNA cannot be lost from the dog.
After you had the x-rays done, the microchip company should pay for the surgery of the removal of the chip. Mine is paying except for the x-rays which is $50.00, even though they say is not their fault....it is that is why they are paying the costs of my puppy's surgery. I'm not staying with my arms crossed, we have to sop them from selling more microchips. What is the point of having a microchip that is going to move around, that must be bothersome.
Get the x-rays done, have the manufacturer pay for the costs if needed.

And still we are told that all these migration storoes are urban myth when I know of at least two people that have had them fail or cause problems for the dog. Mine are chipped (well you have to for Pet Passports), but I prefer the tattoos that mine have.
I have two pups going to live in EU countries and I am not happy that for the EU passport it seems they have to be chipped before they go :( They will ahve been tattooed at 7 weeks so why won't that be enough!!!

Probably because the money funding the Pet Passport campaign, to allow dogs to travel had to come from somewhere and I guess we now know where!
With increasing reports and warnings from vets on the growing threat of tick borne disease, we should be looking at re-introducing quarantine? Bet the microchip companies would fund a campaign against the reintroduction of quarantine too!
As for dogs travelling overseas, like Brainless pups why do they need a microchip? If they are not returning I don't see the need for a microchip, what ever did we do before microchips were invented?
That is how the microchip companies make money, I know for sure I won't microchip my next baby. when I contacted the manufacturer I was even told that they "never" heard of chips moving around the dogs body. They are liers, that is why they are paying for my puppy surgery.

Surely not? That sounds a bit over the top to me!

My 3 cockers are microchipped and I scan them every time they have their vaccination. The chips are all in the original place but we did have one dog scanned the other day whose chip had migrated to it's shoulder! All mine will now be DNA profiled just to be on the safe side.

We had one dog, Spike, chipped at Crufts a couple of years ago. About 5 months later we had borrowed a scanner from the dog warden to check all the dogs chips. The three oldests were all in the right place, two of the others had wondered very slightly but we couldn't find Spike's at all.
Phoned petlog who advised they would pay for him to be x-rayed if the vet couldn't find it. The vet couldn't and so whilst under anaesthetic put in another chip.
Six months later my OH was sitting on the sofa cuddling the dog and suddenly looked up in complete panic. Pursuaded me to check the dogs's chest as she thought she had found a lump! Nope, it was the chip. Took him to the vets who promptly failed to find the chip, then started to call the people who had chipped him - little realising that they themselves had done it!
Ok, so yes I still have my dogs chipped, but the latest ones have all been tattoed as well.
Don't chip them no more, you should have called the manufacturer and complaint like I did.

One of my dogs chip went down his front leg
We should do something about this matter, is not correct for the microchip companies selling chips knowing that it will migrate, "they know" the companies just don't tell. I have tried to find an Animal Lawyer down here in Ft Lauderdale, FL but no luck, the ones that I found are up in Seattle. Dogs can't talk I'll talk for them.

Can i just ask all those people who have found the chip has moved- was the chip done by the vet or someone else ???

This dog's chip was done by someone who'd been trained to do them and wasn't very good at it  but that was when chips were just placed under the skin.
In later years the dogs I've had chipped have had the chip placed into the muscle which holds it in place.

Hi lara, To get the chip into the muscle do they do it the same way ie punture from the outside of the skin? To be that would be very painful unless done under anesthetic.

No more painful than a large injection - my dogs haven't even flinched it's so quick. Yes it's done the same way.
My puppy's was done at the VET.
