Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / clipping or trimming?

As the weather gets hotter, our 9 month old lhasa is becoming more uncomfortable and we have decided to get him trimmed. Is there anyone in the middlesex/Hayes area that would be recommended? Is scissor cutting preferable to clipping? Please help

Hello guest,

I do not live near you but i am a groomer, I take it that you dog is not a show dog if you plan to get him trimmed, but as for clipping or scissoring it depands on how you want your dog to look.
Groomers use clipper combs which are an extension of the clipper but do not scalp the dog but leave a good 1" - 2" of hair on the dog or you could have it's hair thinned out leaving a nice coat but thinner so as not to get overheated in the sun.
When you find a groomer , have a good chat with them and then decide what plan of action to take.
Hope this helps

Hi Guest
I have a 9 month lhasa. Had him trimmed when he was 7 months. I asked them to leave his ears and tail as they were and to give him a 'teddy bear' cut. He came out looking just like I wanted him to .. not too short but nice and fluffy so they must have guessed what I meant by 'teddy bear'. He is now a completely different colour than he was before so dont be surprised if you dont recognise him straight away :D
Best wishes Gina

Hi Guest.
A well groomed coat insulates against the heat in just the same way that it insulates against the cold - the important words are well groomed! In hot countries people wear lots of thin layers of clothing for the same reason, only the tourists wear t-shirts and shorts! Scissoring is a skill, clipping is easier, so you may well have to travel or shop around and/or wait if you want a trained/skilled groomer. Groomers with a good reputation are busy.
Clipping can change the texture of the coat, often appearing thicker and curly. I will often remove the inside of the legs and the tummy, leaving a skirt/fringe at the sides, so that the dog looks natural when standing and walking, but has a bald tummy to lie on a cold floor in hot weather.
Good luck with what you decide and - keep combing!
