My SBT had 7 puppies on Monday, since then all the puppies exept a small bitch have been suckiling fine, when I put her on the teat she falls straight back off, I have persisted and sat holding her on for a while but she gets pushed off by the others when they wake up or if the bitch licks her etc. I have been giving her lactol from early today as she was getting weaker. Since she has been born she weighed 12oz at birth and today she only weighed 8oz. i feed her 20ml of lactol every 2 hours as she is sick if she takes more, then i put her back with mum to be relieved etc, she snuggles in fine and keeps warm, do u think she will be ok?

I have had two experiences of this.  I had one puppy who I handfed for 3 weeks and then he died but I suspect he probably had a underlying cause which hadnt became apparant.  Then I had Scrappy who I used to handfeed and is now the biggest happiest dog you could wish to see.  All you can do is try but it is hard work and can be soul destroying or rewarding depending on the outcome.

you could also try putting her on the teats alone for a while when the others are asleep.

AS she has lost so much weight you must first of all make sure she is not dehydrated - to do this pinch the skin over her withers or on her shoulder, if it is plump and falls back into place at once, OK. but if it is loose and takes a while to smooth IF the pup is dehydrated then feeding milk will not work until fluid level is back up.  then feed the milk mix, but split the feed up into 5 ml amounts every half hour, if she will take it.  Hoep everything works out OK, over the years some of my favourite dogs have been those I have reared after being runts or rejects.
bye
