Topic Dog Boards / Health / i think she has limber tail
- By goat Date 27.07.05 16:40 UTC
I am worried and wonder if anybody could give me so information on Limber tail as I think my lab has got this condition.
Yesterday she made a beeline for the brook at the back of our garden and went in for a swim.  She also wagged her tail a lot last night as we had visitors over.
When they left she began to chase her tail around, whimpering and I did not know what was wrong.  We put her to bed and she was very restless, whimpering again.  At 1.30am we got up and took her out as we thought she needed the toilet but all she did was a wee.  (she usually sleeps right through the night)
Today I have noticed that her tail is hanging in a strange way.  It is straight at the base but then drops limply and does not look quite right.  When she wags it looks strange and she only seems to be wagging the tip of the tail.
I am wondering if she has limber tail as the write ups on this seem to point and describe what she has exactly.  If this is the case should she have anti inflammatories or should I just keep her quiet and calm and if so should I not walk her?  For how long for?
All advice would be so helpful

Relax she has just got "dead" tail or "cold" tail, common in lots of gundogs after they have been swimming,  no special care needed it will spring back to life tomorrow.

hey tohme, how are you?
are you sure this is what it is?  why did she chase her tail like that whimpering.  I have read that limber tail can also be called cold tail but it says that they must rest for 2 weeks or have anti inflammatories.
Anyway I hope you are right and hopefully she will be fine tomorrow.

Yes my Irish Setter had it once, and it took 4 days to recover. No treatment neccessary.

Often happens after shampooing (what is that) :D or a swim, the tail just hangs; no one is really sure why but it is self restoring.

The limp tail syndroma can be caused by draft, too. Here - in the land of thousands of lakes - painkillers if needed (ketoprofein) and a few days rest seems to be the best remedy! :)

when you say rest does that mean no walking?

No! :) - Just no excess training, exercises etc.
