Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / do dogs have tails or are they docked ?
- By Guest [au] Date 27.07.05 12:44 UTC
are there any dogs which do not have tails.... are bob tailed like a cat?
- By tohme Date 27.07.05 12:50 UTC
Yes, Australian Shepherd Dogs for one. Although, like other breeds, they may have tails which are then docked.

The majority of Bulldogs have a screw tail which looks like the have been docked, but they haven't.

Well I never knew standard poodles did too, I always thought that they were docked :d

I did too!

How come standards can have a bobtail whilst minis and toys are docked?

As far as I am aware poodles do not have natural bobs and would love to know where this came from!!

Some Standard poodles are born with natural bobs not many but they are around(possibly not in the UK but in their homeland of Germany) & like the pembrokeshire corgis pre WWII there were more natural bobs around than there are now

(BTW the CDB also has some SP's as having natural bobs)

I wonder why the Poodle people aren't more interested in this?  As long as they don't do bobs to bobs there shouldn't be any problem.  I know that somewhere in the distant past my breed and the Poodle are related and I keep bobtails so that I can put them to a tailed dog and I nearly always get half a litter with a bobtail and half with a full tail.

It is easier I suppose to breed a quality dog to a quality bitch than to have to find one or the other & a bob tail too ! I never realised it was the beardie blood used to out cross with the OES that brought in the tails !

Edited to add I must get to see your SWD at Darlington as the photos I have seen don't do them justice

Can't spell it but Schipperke's :d  Sorry to their owners for the spelling, but I think it's close.

Boxers?? I thought boxers were a docked breed,as well as australian silky terriers. I know i've seen boxers with tails before.
- By Boxacrazy [gb] Date 28.07.05 06:12 UTC
Yup BOXERS :D
There is now a strain called bobtailed Boxers. These have naturally short tails.
You can read all about it at www.steynmere.com
These now are found in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Holland, Spain & USA.

But you can still the 'tailed' variety too :)

The information I have given is from the CDB so I think they should know I do know about the poodles as I know a retired Poodle breeder in Germany whose father had bob poodles pre WWII

Boxers were a docked breed but then crossed with a bobtail breed to make bobtails a few generations on and now they are full Boxers again and approved by the KC or so I believe.
