Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / SEPARATION ANXIETY 'RELAPSE'????!!!
- By karlai15 [gb] Date 26.07.05 20:19 UTC
Hi, I have posted previously before on this SA subject.
Lucky( 8yr old x collie) seemed to be improving and not howling or barking anymore.
But these past few days he has started up again???
I tried the Homeopathic tablets Ignatia and got a DAP as well, and weaned him off the tablets.
Its been about a month and he has started to bark and howl again, altho to me, nothing has been changed?
We keep his routine the same and he was happy for a few weeks. We record him whilst we are out and he seems to have had a relapse, if that is possible. We have tried everything radios, telly, a fan and even fitted an outdoor letter box in case the postman had uset him.
I have put him bk on the Ignatia tablets, but this is no long term solution.
I have also tried him on Dorwest hers Valerian and Scullcap and that doesnt seem to calm him down.
Is there anything anyone can suggest? I am willing to try everything, we dont want to have to take him bk to my mums..... :(

Might be an 'extinction burst' just go back to basics training wise and continue with the ignatia if that is helping him.   Homeopathic ignatia won't hurt long term.

A lady on here told me that he will need to be weaned off the Ignatia tablets? I start him off on three per day for about a week, and then wean him off gradually.
I dont know of anything else that will help him.

Have you thought of using Bach Flower Remedy Chicory?

This can be useful with dogs with SA.

Just add 4 drops to the drinking water.  The beauty of Flower Essences is that you cannot do any harm and the worst that can happen is that it has no effect.

Where do i get that from? We will try anything at the mo.
Thing is its only in the morning he goes mad? and in the afternoon after i have been home for lunch and let them out he is fine. Happy as larry?
But the mornings??? well he howled and barked this mornin for an hour.
:(
How often do i need to put drops in water> he wont eat or drink when he is upset.

I have seen the Bach remedies in Holland and Barrett and Boots.

We use Anxiety from homeopet it contains, Chamomilla, Valeriana,Borax,Cypripedium Pub., Ignatia A., Colch. Verat. A. 6&30C in 20% USP alc. in purified water.

It does seem to help, though we had a major set back right to the beggining when she came into season and also after a short trip to the vets and two hours in one of their cages, and also sometimes she goes backwards if I have left her for a day and left her with mum and dad.

She is very clingy at the mo as we went to ireland for 4 days, anything small even if its insignificant to us can set her back.

We find shutting her away makes her worse cause it stops her doing anything about how she is feeling.

Well he is put in the kitchen for most of the day when i am working, he wld rip the house apart on a bad day if i left him out.
I do record him everday and it upsets me that we can seem to find anything to help.
Where can i buy those drops from? and how do i use them, in water?

Neither Boots nor H & B will necessarily carry the whole range, only the most popular ones so you may find Chicory and Heather absent from the shelf.

I would suggest that you perhaps combine chicory with heather, difficult to fathom the correct one via the ether.

You may drop straight into mouth on departure you may also put 4 drops per day of each in the drinking water.

The beauty of FE is that if it is not the correct one, nothing adverse will happen and you cannot OD.

Homoepathic treatment needs to be given either for symptomatic relief or a constitutional remedy.

For the novice, FE are probably easier to experiment with.

If it is going to work it should do so in a very short time.

Thanks, we will def have a look into that.
We have tried Rescue Remedy before and that seems to do nothing for him?
We have taken training back to basics and strating from scratch again.

I buy them either from our behaviourist or the pet shop in town which is a very good one, though I have seen them on e-bay. They can be dropped straight in the mouth (no chance with buffy) in food or in water. You can also increase doasge for bad attacks again if its going to work it we noticed a difference in about 3 days, i know only use them if we have to do something that upsets her routine.

When we first went to our behaviourist she suggested spending a whole week or two never letting the dog out of your sight and letting them always be with you and to praise them if they went away on their own accord this gets them out of the habbit of being stressed and stops them antisipating your leaving them. Worked for us, buffy is doing really well, however i am lucky that i only work part time and I can take her with me!! Even though she has disrupted everyone this morning by barking at the window cleaners!! She is also happy left in the car for hours proividing its not too hot, and she will have a heat pad for the winter.

Warm Mash potatoe and  cheese in a very large kong also works wonders!!!
