I'm just curious. At our puppy class, I was told that the disc I had on my pup had inadequate information on, and did not comply with legal requirements. We had on it: 2 telephone numbers and our full address. I was told it didn't comply because our name wasn't on it. Does anyone know if this is correct and is a legal requirement?
BTW I changed it anyway, and both dogs are microchipped
Thanks in advance - I'm sure someone will be able to answer

My own understanding is that your name and address are a legal requirement. Phone numbers are not.
I really didn;t know what was necessary, so my new puppy will have a disk and a barrel. The disk has our home phone number on it, and the barrel has both mine and my partners names, our home address and both our mobile numbers.
Does it matter whether the information is on a disc or in a barrel? Or does all the info have to specifically be on a disc?
I got mine done at pets at home in a proper ingraving machine and i got the one where the dogs name and my phone number is on it, no one said anything about this being wrong, even at my puppy classes who told me to get the tag in the first place, i have been told however not to have your address on show, for the simple reason if someone spots your dog like say a theif for instance and he comes over innocently to stroke your dog, it doesnt matter about the dogs name being on the tag as people ask you what their called anyway, but his only got to notice your address on the tag and he now knows where your dog lives!!

Control of Dog Order 1992
Every dog while in a highway or in a place of public resort, shall wear a collar with the name and address of the owner inscribed on the collar or on a plate or badge attached thereto.
You can be fined up to £5,000 if your dog does not wear an identification disc.
It does not matter if it is on a disc or a in a barrel providing the information is there and legible.
Hi ive been told by the local police that people are tending to try to steal dogs with owners name and address on id tag as they can then threat for a ransom he advised me to just go with mpb and wear that tag so therefore who-ever finds the dog will have to contact them instead and they contact you also they are now doing a dna thing where they send you a kit you swab inside your dogs mouth so if you see someone with what looks like your dog if you lost it and they deny its yours you can take it to a court of law and mpb proove the dog is yours from the dna they keep on register so i think its a better way to id a dog than giving everyone your details

Yep, the law requires the owner's name and address to be on the ID tag.
I think that you can just put the house number and postcode
if you don't want to put the full address.
At least that's what our dog warden said.

That's not what the law says. It's very clear that owner's name and address are compulsory.
:)
I still have got my name and full address on my dog's ID tags
;)
yes the dog warden told me the same

I'm astonished that so many dog wardens don't know the law. :(

that's what I've read/heard too, owner's name and addy. So my dog's tags are rather illegal!! They have the dog's name, my address, my home + mob numbers, and both dogs have a tag with "I ened daily meds" and "I am microchipped" on it as an added incentive should the worst happen :)
I will be getting tags with my name on though, I am too paranoid I think... I'm toying with the idea of tattooing as well!

Mine have my affix (which is easier than my name :D )Full address and phone no one side and " I am Ear tattooed and microchipoed contact NDTR and Petlog" on the other side.
Hi,
I was watching the news the other night and they were talking about the DNA testing kit. Can anyone tell me where to get on as I missed the name of the place that done them.
Thanks

Do you mean
this or the KC DNA profiling ?

I'd be interested in finding out about the dna kit too, if anyone has any info.
However, my dogs will still wear a tag displaying my full address, tel. no. I may be terrified of them being stolen but I would also like to think that if they somehow got away from me and were found, they could be returned quicly to me without having to contact third parties like the dog warden etc. Also, we still have dog licences here so their licence tag no. can also be traced through the council.
missing pets buruea do them and keep it on record (think i spelt it wrong sorry)
mpb also return the dog to you sometimes before some people who let their dogs rome free which i dont think is ideal before they even notice they are missing also if god forbid a rta happened they treat the dog with the nearest vet if away from who you are registerd with as you sign a form to let them treat the dog if anything happened they are very very good

Thanks, I'll check it out.
If you put your dogs name on the tag and it gets stolen, then the theif will know the dogs name!!!!! Meaning he will have better control over the dog especially if that dog is willing to do anything for anyone.
He might already know the dogs name, because he might have already seen you out with your dog and asked you!

Hi,
We have a problem with having collars on Sams as it rubs all there fur off,
that makes them no good for showing. So my Sams are chipped and wear a harness
for walks, and a thin lead and collar in the ring.
They don't go out only with us and the back and the run is very well fenced in.
Regards

Have you tried rolled leather collars denese? My rott X has this problem if I use any other type, she now has a rolled suede collar which almost stops it. proper rolled leather works the best, there just weren't any when I bought it :)
I checked this out with the kc who say that name and address is essential but you can put you house number and postcode on as it still keeps in with the law. They also do them at £5 each so I have just ordered new ones - my surname, house no. & postcode and phone no.
I dont get that with the post code though, what if someone finds your dog? How are they going to know what street the postcode is for?

They won't unless of course they happen to a) live there, b) carry around a book of postcodes or c) take dog home/to vet/to dog warden/to police etc to find out..................
Thats why i thought that a contact number would be enough, if that person has no mobile then if they needed to go home, vets, police then they would just use the phone there insted of searching for postcodes

Of course, vets are open 24 hours, so are police and dog wardens (not) and of course the owner of the lost dog is probably on the phone already, informing the above plus dog homes etc...........................
And if you found the dog have you room in your car, would your dog let it in the house, etc etc etc
I thought all police stations were open 24hours, anyway its not like your randomly going to be wandering the streets at 3 in the morning, on my tag ive got my mobile phone number as if my dog ever did get lost obviously id keep my mobile free for anyone to call on it

"I thought all police stations were open 24hours"
ROFLMAO which planet do you live on?
In my COUNTY the police stations are open at specific half hour periods during the day............ bar headquarters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In my town that is 18:00 - 18:30................
Ours is! Maybe not to the public at stupid O` clock in the morning, like i said your not out at that time or awake.

ROFL! Nope! The nearest one (5 miles away) is open on Monday and Wednesdays, 10 am till 12 noon. Outside those times (but within 'office hours') a call is transferred to the next town (11 miles away). Outside those times a call goes to county HQ, 10 miles further on. And as stray dogs aren't police business, and they only tell you to contact the council dog warden, it wouldn't matter anyway.
LOL No wonder the crime in this country is so bad!

Exactly JG. I live in a city that has a huge police presence but the police are not interested in lost/found dogs and the police stations are not equipped with kennels etc. to take them in anyway. So, if you find a dog outside of dog warden /vet hours and can't easily identify an owner, what are you supposed to do with it given that it's not always feasible to bring a strange dog into your home.
If i was in that situation id ask a neighbour, but when you think about it any dog owner who knew their dog was missing who had a their mobile number on the id tag would have that phone stuck to their side! If they cared about their dogs as much as us lot do! Some people dont give a crap about their dogs and dont care if they go missing, as to why so many are put in these homes and need rehoming, other than the people who can no longer care for their dog.
>can't easily identify an owner, what are you supposed to do with it
Let it go again, probably. :( Not very satisfactory, especially when it could be so easily avoided. :(
Postcodes can be found in the back of a directory. Well at least, they are in ours. Besides, I wanted to keep within the law. My dogs are never given a chance to get out or lost. Too closely supervised.

Most of us can be seen at anytime with a telephone directory under our arms at any given moment............

Now, now tohme that's just being silly

Would never work unless of course you carried a Yellow Pages under the other arm for balance :D :D :D
:D :D :D
Should we put one on our heads to save our backs?
TBH whenever I've found a loose dog I try to catch it and then whip out my under-the-arm copy of the Yellow Pages, or check my mobile, and phone the dog warden. I certainly wouldn't go trecking about looking for the address. I may be able to get around but don't ever ask me where a certain road is, I never know. Anyone pulls up and asks me I just tell them I don't live in the area. :p
The thing is though, those of us who are decent enough dog owners with a shread of responsibility don't allow the opportunity for our dogs to escape. In ten years I have never had one so much as sneak out the back gate unnoticed. They are at my heels all the time and I am so aware of their every twitch/breath/movement. ;)

I am also one of these strange people who do walk my dogs at stupid o clock if the mood takes me. Lovely well lit empty streets ideal for soem serious pavement pounding :D

This has been my problem on many an occasion, and for some rreason always when I have pups at home or a bitch in season. I ahve to admit I have left the dog to it and hoped it would find it's way home :(
I don't even drive so couldn't take it to the dogs home. In the past I ahve walked several miles to a Police station that had kenneling.
When there has been an address on it I ahve simply put a spare lead on dog and walked it home, even if it meant leaving it with a neighbour because the ownere was out searching for their dog, or at work.
Hey for those of you that go to dog shows, try putting your mobile number on. If you're anything like me I travel miles to agility shows. It's no good having my home number really when I am miles and miles away from home. I make sure my mobile number is on there so I could if needs be, be contacted whilst I am still in that area.

I use round half check collars on my Elkhounds who also have a ruff. They wear them 24/7, and it hasn't spoiled their show chances.

Well they are right then!
BTW what does ROFL and ROFLMAO mean please!

ROFL = Rolling on the floor laughing
ROFLMAO = (as above) my "armadillo" off

pssst. armadillo isn't quite true, it's actually a8se but of course I'd never put that on a public forum :D
