We  have always had Large Dogs as pets and after the loss of our Baby Boy Barney a Newfoundland we are now looking for a St Bernard, of between 18 Months and Six Years old, they must be good with Children and Adults alike and also with other Dogs and Cats. Our new addition would be one of the Family and woyuld be treated as our baby just like Barney was. we are willing to pay upto £300 and would like a Kennel Club Registered dog. We are constantly looking for a st Bernard that needs rehoming rather than a Puppy as wel feel this would be better for us.

If you can help please contact Tina and Alan Valkeith on 01832 270107 during the day or

You will find contact details for St.Bernard Breed Clubs at the bottom of the KC breed standard  This is not my breed but I would imagine £300 is a very low price for a puppy in any large breed I would imagine about twice that to be rather nearer the mark.  Of course you may find cheaper ones but this very often leads to the risk of a poorly planned and raised litter and consequently much higher costs in the long term relating to congenital health problems such as Hip Displasia and temperament problems that can also lead to costs in terms of professional attention.

I do know that newfoundland and bernese mountain dogs are £750-to £800 and i checked out several breeders and were all about the same, not sure if rescue centres would be a cheaper option though, didnt look into that one,St.Bernards are a similar breed to the newfies and berners so would imagine a puppy from a breeder with papers would be a similar price, have you tried looking on the net for rescue centres they have them for berners.Sorry dont know any sites but i asked Jeeves for a particular breed and then several links came up,what about trying a breeder to see if they maybe have had a young dog or a pup returned and need to rehome it,maybe that way you might get one slightly cheaper, not sure though anything worth a try.Good luck with your search keep us posted on your progress.

I think, though, if someone cannot afford the £3/400 difference we are talking about here you have to question whether they can afford the running costs of a breed like this.  The weekly food bills, the higher insurance premiums or the extra costs of veterinary care due to larger doses of drugs, anaesthetics, wormers, flea treatments etc are probably not a wise undertaking for the budget household.

You could try emailing reputable breeders who very often have either kept a pup back for showing but it didn;t turn out as they'd have liked or one they have taken back from the owners due to unforseen circumstances.
You probably wouldn't pay the full price as they would want to ensure a good a home as possible and be prepared to be home checked.
As was said try rescues i know that my breed rescues only ask for a donation of less the price you are willing to pay (but be prepared for the homechecks)
