Hi .I am looking after my daughters 8 1/2 month old Cavalier and she has come in to season. I have never had a bitch in season before as we always had them spayed before the first one. I noticed a few traces of blood on my bed yesterday(she likes to lie on it),and she has been doing a lot of licking in the area.My daughter is away for 2 weeks holiday so I was wondering how long this lasts. I know I will have to keep her away from other dogs, but how long does this bleeding last? There was quite a lot on the floor this morning when she got up,,although she has been cleaning herself quite a lot. Will she bleed for 3 weeks?Just so I know what to expect and not get panicky in case something is wrong. My daughter will be gobsmacked,as this is a very small Cavalier off Loranka strain, and she reckoned that she wouldnt have her first season till she was about a year old.Any help or advice would be appreciated as I have never coped with this before
Thanks, Jean

The bleeding may well last for three weeks, though it will probably become less towards the end of that time. On the other hand it may turn to a strawy colour after 10 days or so - this often happens when a bitch enters the fertile period of her season. Keep her away from all other dogs for at least three weeks, and don't even allow her in your own garden unattended.
