I am possibly going to get a Vizla/Labrador cross puppy and I need to find out information about the vizla's temperament.  We are looking for a pet which is loving and good with children.  We will not require the dog to be a working dog.

Please could you advise

Not wishing to start a debate on deliberate cross breeding but I am hoping your potential pup was the result of an accidental mating and wasn't intentional.

Vizslak are very loving and affectionate and I know lots of people with the breed who also have children(of all ages) and the dogs are fine with them. We have 2 HVs and one HWV and despite not alot of contact with children they are all very gentle, I took my wire pup to a game fair when he was about 4/5 months old and a baby(not sure of age but was on her own feet:D) was making friends with him and he was being so gentle, trying to lick her face which she found very amusing....obviously used to dogs but I was very proud of my little boy that day as he could easily of knocked her off her feet but it was like he knew to be kind to her!

They grow very attached to their families but ours are also not at all aloof with people they don't know but they can have a tendency towards nervousness ,so early and good socialisation is necesssary.

I have no experience of Labradors so hopefully someone else will be along soon to advise on them as the pup will take traits from each parent and you need to be aware of both, and even if you don't want to work a pup of this parentage will need alot of mental stimulation....so agility, working training(just for fun rather than to lead onto actual working) obedience etc etc

Hope this helps

Emily

adding to what others have said, I dont know any reputable Vizsla breeders who would deliberatly cross a vizsla with a labrador or any other breed, so buyer beware ;) edited to say both labradors and vizslas are breeds reccomended for hipm scoring ,so wether the litter is pure bred or not you should make sure both parents are hip scored .
Vizslas scores should ideally be below 12 (combined score for both hips) and i think labradors is 16 (combined score for both hips)

Vizsla crosses that I have encountered have been very nice dogs. Very calm and easy going dogs. I will admit that I have not come across a lab cross but would guess that it will be easy going. As with all dogs, make sure you do your basic training as you will be taking on a dog with strong hunting instincts whether you intend to work it or not. For many years there was a very well know and respected breeder that used to cross the HV with another HPR. She produced some excellent dogs for the field and they didn't look to bad either! Not that I am condoning the practise. Far from it.
