We have a two year old sterilised female lab.  We got her from a pound 5 days ago.  She is great except when we come home (after 5 minutes or a couple of hours), she is so excited, she wees before we can open the door.  Obviously she is excited to hear us and is very new to our home, but we would like to cure this habit.  Our 11 year old male lab didn't do this - any suggestions.

Many thanks

Keep your greeting VERY low key (don't look at her, don't speak to her, but chatter away to yourself if there is nobody there so she doens't think it's something she's done, make sure you keep your shouldars dropped and relaxed)- even to the point of ignoring her, while you get to the door, then greet her outside, ideally somewhere where she can be level with you - a small wall if it's safe, or a bench....  Make sure you don't bend over her, stroke her chest and belly, NOT her head and shouldars as this is the behaviour of a higher ranking animal who is looking for submission.  Once she's more settled, you can teach her to 'sit' to say hello, and 'shaking hands' makes a dog sit properly on it's bottom, which makes it harder to wee and also gives the dog a behaviour you DO want.......

Agree with Digger -our terrier used to do the weeing as we come in -we got in the routine of sort of side stepping her till we got her out the back door -the biggest thing with her was not bending over her ( hard with a  terrier lol )

I agree with Digger.

Also mine has just gone through something similar but has actually got over it now so it could just be a phase although she sounds a little too old for this. You never know though as she is a rescue dog perhaps she is ultra excited to be in a loving home.
