Hi, I have just recentley bought a Toy Poodle. The breeder said the previous owner had returned her as she was having problems, but she was KC reg. She gave me a A4 size sheet with her pedigree on it and her KC name and reg no. I went to buy another yesterday from a reputable breeder who told me I was not the owner of the dog without a KC certificate? He gave my a KC form to register the dog in my name, but I dont know what to do about the other one, any ideas would be appricated.

Ask the previous owner or the breeder to get you the papers.  the old owner may have lost them, but in this situation the Kennel Club will issue new ones once they know for sure that ownership changed.  the breeeder can then pass the documents onto you for you to transfer the ownership.

Legally the dog is yours, as you have bought it, it just isn't registered in your name, so you wouldn't be able to show it or breed from it even if it has no endorsements on it's papers.

Thanks for your reply. I have contacted the breeder who said she had not registered the litter, but would ring the Kennel Club tomorrow to try to register. Is this possible as the dog is now 8 months old?

A litter can be registered up to 12 months of age for normal fees after that it costs £50 per dog

Hi Debby - dont' want to alarm you, but did she not have a kc registered name and number on the A4 sheet she gave you originally.

Without the dog's original registration document you can't send off the 'transfer of ownership' section to have the dog put into your name. Contact the breeder to get the original document - you can't register the dog yourself.

Unless you have a receipt and since you have the registration number and the dogs kennel number the kennel club might send you a transfer of ownership form if you have proof of the purchase.  I would definitely give the kennel club a ring aswell and see what they say.

Warm regards Susan
