Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Poop smells... (sorry!)

At the moment, if our dogs do their business in the garden, we scoop it up into fragranced nappy sacks, tie them up and then pop them into a bin outside (this bin is used solely for the nappy sacks)

Whilst I realise that the warmer weather does not lend itself well to poop odours, I just wondered if anybody knew of anything that we could gather the poop in, that does not leave us heaving from the vile smell we get when we open the bin lid to deposit out little poppets poo's!!

We empty the bin bag every week when the dustmen come (poor blokes!) and each time we empty the bin, we bleach it out and pop a clean bin bag in.

Is there something that could be sprinked or sprayed into the bin that will make that damn lid lifting experience a more pleasant one?

Oh and why does puppy poop smell so much worse than adult poop?

IMHO, diet plays a large part in the shape and smell of faeces matter. So perhaps this is worth considering...........

could you not pick them up on a shovel and put them down the toilet?

we are not allowed to put dog poop down our toilets it has to go out for the dustman.

Well there are cat litter refreshers or sprays that absorb the smell of cat litter trays that might work

You could sprinkle/spray them in the bin

Out of curiosity - why can't you put it down the loo and who would know ?

Indeed there should be no reason why you cannot flush doggie poo down the loo, it biodegrades just the same as human poo. It is also alot more environmentally friendly as the poo then goes to the sewage plant and gets processed instead of going to the landfill and making a huge stink, thus attratcing flies and thus making large areas stinky on the whole.

Also if you have a garden, compost your food bits and you can also add doggie poo to the final mix. Thus doing yer bit for the planet. :)

I wouldnt fancy carrying poo upstairs to the toilet through the house,i use the outside bin myself.

:D at sarstaff, sorry but I can just picture you 'using the outside bin' :D
must be the heat affecting me today :D

seriously though my husband works for the 'unclean' side of water :D i.e. sewers and waste and says he has never heard of putting doggie poo down the loo as not being allowed, although I too use scented poop bags and lots of airfreshener in our bin.

I'm sorry for being thick, but do you have people employed to determine whether the poo going down the loo is from a human or a dog?
- By echo [gb] Date 18.07.05 06:19 UTC
Can't be identified, all gets processed and returned to land or sea.  If we keep taking poo out of the environment and mumifiying it in little plastic bags we are robbing the planet of a valuable rescource. Flush it - job well done!.

I am begining to sound like my son

I kind of achieve a happy medium...i do bag it and bin it but in biodegradable bags so it'll eventaully decompose naturally in landfill.

Does anyone else worry about the unhealthy amount of time we spend talking about poo on this forum? :d :D

Poo does seem to be the one thing I can rely on my dogs to produce.  Good to have something you can depend on.
