Topic Dog Boards / Health / Glazby (Boxer) Sick

Glazby has been off colour for the last few days.  We bought him some worming tablets on Friday and gave them to him (they weren't the usual ones we get from vets but some recommended by a friend).

Since then we woke up on Saturday morning to find that he'd been sick about 3 times.  Over the course of Saturday he continued to be sick (was eating grass in the garden), however the sick was just white foamy stuff.

We decided to starve him for a day yesterday and I must admit he didn't seem interested in food when we ate and was quite lethargic all day.  We let him sleep and rest but on a few ocassions he was sick again - this time yellowy bile.

We've made sure that he's stayed as cool as possible, he's had fresh water and we've been keeping an eye on him.

OH's mum has said that its quite common for dogs to be sick in the hot weather or it could be a combination of the heat and the worming tablets and just to keep him out of the sun and make sure that he has water nearby.

Are we doing right by just keeping an eye on him?  I was going to try him with some chicken and rice for dinner and see if he keeps it down.  Do you think a trip to the vets might be necessary?  How do I look out for signs of dehydration in him?  I'm concerned that if he's sick everytime he has a drink that he's not keeping down enough fluids.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Hayley

I think you should see your vet ASAP. In this heat, dehydration could set in quickly. It may be something simple but always best to be on the safe side.

In the meantime, maybe try giving him ice cubes to suck/chew on if he'll take them.

Hayley..you should definetly take him to the vet..its not normal for them to be sick regardless of the weather..some of those over the counter wormers are very toxic and could compound whatever is wrong with him

Have to agree take him to the vet.  I remember years ago before we knew what was what and didn't know that the over the counter wormers were rubbish we have a pup that died after being wormed.  We gave her the correct dose etc.  It was an awful death and one that I wouldn't wish on anyone, and she was to and from the vets for 3 days.

It really isn't worth going elsewhere you should always use the ones that the vets advise.

Thanks all.  I've got him booked in tomorrow morning at the Vets though they have said that if he has continued to be sick this evening and we are worried then to take him to the vet hospital to see the emergency on call vet.

He did seem a bit brighter at lunchtime - still not 100% but he took an interest in my cheese sandwich which is a definite improvement to yesterday when we had a BBQ and he didn't even bat an eyelid at the sausages, burgers and his fave chicken wings.

Have learned my lesson with the over the counter wormers.  I wasn't happy in getting them in the first place but OH convinced me  :-(  I should have listened to my gut instinct.

Hope my little man will be feeling better soon.  :-(

Thanks again
Hayley..x

I feel quite lucky then as I had no idea until joining CD that the over the counter ones were so useless and even possibly dangerous. I gave them to our first dog and, luckily, no side effects and no worms. However, he does seem to have the constitution of an ox (probably as a result of being half Lab) so maybe that has helped. Am now using Drontal for both dogs and am hoping things continue to go smoothly with it.
