I have 2 border collies, one is 1 1/2 years and the other is 2 1/2 years .We have been taking them for very long walks recently but still give them water breaks. They seem to enjoy it and one of the collies still wants to play ball when we get back whilst the other is flaked out.I just wondered if there is too much walking you can give a collie or should he be able to keep up with a normal adult .Im not over fit but i think we must have walked 6 miles yesterday,is this ok .Thanks a lot

If it was at 5am or at 10pm at nigth no problem, otherwise too much in this heat.

Think how far a border collie travels in a normal day's work herding sheep! I'm told a 'quiet' day is usually 20+ miles, and a 'busy' day can be up to 50 miles, toing and froing, and rounding up. So 6 miles is chicken feed for a fit dog.

But of course in this heat you wouldn't subject your dog to that.

Spice BC averages 6-8 miles a day on her walks, in total and would happily do more! plus she plays football, but certainly not in this heat! Today she went out at 6am for about 20mins and this afternoon she swam about 1 1/2 - 2miles around the lakes :D then shared her smelly lake water with us :D over a cooling ice cream. Tonight she will go out again for about 20mins at 9.30-10pm.She is 21 months old now.
Jacqueline :)
