A family pet can be show quality or from a litter where that was the aim.  You should never settle for a pup that was bred without trying to breed the best possible typical healthy specimins who will all be pets, but some may be shown too.

Your bet bet is to contact the breed clubs for a list of reputable breeders.  Parents shoudl be eye tested and I would think Hip scoring should also be carried out to help prevent hereditary disease.  there is another condition called dermoid sinus which ethical breeders will take steps to avoid producing.

The club secretaries will aslo be able to advise if they knoiw the repoutaion of any breeder who you may find advertised, so helping ensure that you are not inadvertently lining the poclets of people out only to exploit the breed.

Try the Standard Poodle Club, www.standardpoodleclub.com (sorry not sure of how to do links) they will be more than willing to help you.

Make sure the parents of any pup you buy has been tested for sebacious adonitis  (not sure if that spelt correctly!)  if they havn't been don't touch them with a barge pole, also ask if there is any history of addison's disease (they can't actually test for this but worth asking if it is in the line).  There shouldn't be too much difference in the price whether it is for show or pet so don't expect to get one cheaper.

On average the price will be £500-£600
