At what age on a male puppy would you expect to be able to feel the test*cles? Im due to buy a male for the ring and future breeding. He's from fantastic lines, but the breeder says if she can not feel 2 testicles by 8wks of age that i can not have him. Is this to early???

Hi Bears_mum,

A lot depends on the breed (tiny pups = tiny bits :P ) and also how experienced a breeder is at finding testes in the first place.  They can often be felt (but not down in the scrotum) at around 5 weeks but there is no need to panic if they can't be felt that early either - there's a technique to finding them ;)   Also at 8 weeks some pups' may be easy to find but unless the breeder is confident that they are able to draw them down into the scrotum would not be happy to release a male puppy for showing purposes.  It could also be that your breeder is aware of a problem in the line regarding retained testes in which case you would do best to discuss this more fully with him/her.   I'm sure if it is a particularly promising male puppy a sensible breeder would hold onto him a little longer to give the testes time to descend if already satisfied that they were both there and even if unsure would have another experienced breeder and possibly their vet check if they could find them.

Some people do over-do the checking of testes which can cause the puppy to draw them out of the way of prodding fingers :P

Hope he works out for you, let us know,  Teri :)

Hi

I have a wonderful breeder who has been in my breed since they came to the UK some 20yrs ago. She is aware that the stud she has used there is a problem in his line so this is why she's checkling him so often. She's a lovely breeder and has just said she'll happily run him on till 12wks and if they are not down then, she will pet home him. My fingers are soooooo tightly crossed as this puppy is a little beauty! lol I cant help but panic xxxx

One of my cavaliers only had one testicle until he was 24wks old, then his second one dropped. It would be a shame for you to miss out on this dog for his testicles to drop at a later stage, can you work anything out with the breeder maybe suggesting you take him and if his testicles don't drop by the time he is say five months old she returns any money paid and finds a pet home for him.

My puppy shar-pei had his health check yesturday at 12 weeks old and the vet said he could feel both of them, still high though, fingers crossed they both drop.
Hes got a clean w-lly though cos my 20 mth old shar-pei girl keeps cleaning it for him.
Is this normal lol.
He loves it though, huh men..

I was wondering a similar thing as far as when they can be easily felt.  I haven't had many males in my breed.  I show and am concerned about testicles on the males.   This is one of the toy breeds (larger toy breed)  What is considered normal to be able to feel them easily.  I understand some come down later but I was wondering when most can be felt in the small breeds.
