Hi, am totally new to this but wondered if you could hel me! I have a six month old weimaraner puppy who has not decended one of his testicles! He has to go for surgery on friday to have them both removed?? Should I consult the breeder and let him know that thi shas happened?? also will this affect his tempermant in anyway,as he is a brilliant and fun loving dog and don't really want that spoiling although his health is the main priority!?

he is only young get and it could still come down. Have a talk with the breeder and see what he/she says

Definitely tell the breeder as it can be hereditary.  I would leave it at least another 6 months before you have him castrated.  If you would rather he wasnt castrated some vets will just remove the retained one leaving the descended one in place :)

I would also wait another 6 months, some vets seem to be in a rush to do this and scare the hell out of puppy owners.  Give him a little longer unless you have a bitch and you are worried about her being mated.

I took Fagan in for his booster last week and I got the lecture that I should really have his retained one removed because you dont know whats happening inside  I really want to wait until Fagan is 2 as this is when his breed have matured properly and there is always that small hope up until then ;)

If I had a dog with a retained testicle I would probably have that one removed when the dog was between 12/18 months and leave the other - I doubt I would wait until two years old but that is purely my own opinion. There is virtually no chance the testicle will decend at this age and leaving it could cause problems.

I too would give him more time. If the retained one hasn't descended by his birthday, certainly have that one removed. The normal one can safely be left in situ. Also inform his breeder. Good luck.

I've got to agree with the others, my youngest had one retained until he was almost 8 months old and my vet didnt see cause for concern until he was at leas 12 months old.

If you would prefer to keep your dog intact then give him a while longer :)

I am the proud owner of 2 of the greatest weimaraners in the world. And my male who is 2 years old only has one testicle also. when i started to get concerned about breeding and whether this would afect his proformance i took him to the vet. and she said he was fine. he has now been the father of 2 heathly litters of pups. If u ask me puttin your weim under the KNIFE might make him hold a grudge. and might not come home acting like the same dog u love. His problem is not that exterme and u should get them removed.

Dear OP

It is advisable NEVER to breed from a cryptorchid, in fact if you were a WCGB/WA member in the UK the codes of ethics/conduct specifically mention that you should only breed from dogs that meet the KC standard; that standard includes two fully descended t*sticles!

Dogs have no idea what their t*sticles are for and do not hold grudges; that is not how dogs work.

Removing t*sticles will not change your dog one iota............... please do not worry, but DO tell your breeder.

2 healthy litters of pups and he is only 2 years old!!!!  THat is really going some!!  Is he a SH CH or something that makes you want to use him at stud so often?  Dogs really don't hold grudges.  It is not the way they think so do not worry on that score OP.  If you don't want to get your dog castrated then don't do it at the moment.  Wait until he is a bit older an see what happens.

Blimey if my Vet gave me advice like that I would change them in a flash!  Very irresponsible to breed from a monorchid, what a shame some of those puppies may also be monorchids and have serious problems.

Oh good grief! Are you saying you've actually used a cryptorchid dog at stud? That should never be done, as it's a hereditary condition. As for the dog holding a grudge - what utter nonsense!

Do you know what's scary JG? A lot of people think that!!!  And, a lot of people will be breeding from weims because they are such a popular breed now.  Sad state of affairs.  I don't know much about this subject i.e. undescended testicles, breeding - or showing for that matter!!!  but I did have to comment on the fact that a 2 year old dog has had 2 litters of pups already.  Shame!!  What is it with people that they have to go out and breed willy nilly?  You can bet your bottom dollar that the bitch won't have been quality either because anybody with a good bitch wouldn't let a dog with this condition mate with it.  Effectively that means that there will be approximately 22 weim puppies out there (large litters!) and no doubt some will end up in rescue.  If they have taken so little time to think about the breeding, how much time do you think they will have given to finding suitable homes for these puppies?

Actually, that's not a lot for a quality dog to have sired - they're not like bitches in that respect.

Hi, I was once told by a lady with Bull Terriers (not my breed) that one of the top stud dog's  in that breed ever only had one desended testicle. He never produced a pup with the same problem.
- By Moonmaiden Date 16.07.05 14:19 UTC
That was a very long time ago & BTs still have problems with dogs not being entire some 60 odd years later

The dog you mention was of outstanding conformation & used because of this I cannot remember his KC name off the top of my head but do remember Raymond Oppenheimer saying it was the lesser of two evils at the time he was used as he had a perfect mouth & other virtues whereas other stud dogs had bad mouths & poor heads etc

Arggh I will be racking my brains to try to remember the name of the dog

It was Bar sinister.......... I believe his testicle came down when he was quite old, Im not too sure how true it is (I was born in 1978 so it was a bit before my time :@)
