We are getting a new westie puppy (male) next week we have already got a male westie who is 2 1/2 I am wondering the best way of introducing them and is it better to seperate them at night. Bailey is a great natured dog he is also castrated (through medical) will this have any effect on them? Any help greatly received.

We have a 2yr old male westie at the moment and we're picking up a bitch westie in 8wks time. The best advice we've be given so far is to introduce the westies together in a diffirent house, if you bring your new puppy into your home your current westie will never forgive you.

Once they've got to know each other, bring them into your home but dont let your current westie see you bringing in the new pup.

As for the nighttime bit, im not sure on that, but ill be interest to know what happens with yours.

congrats on getting your new puppy soon.

The best advice I was given years ago by a behaviourist at crufts was to introduce them outside the premises let them sniff each other and then let the older dog enter the house first as if inviting pup into her home.

We have always followed this rule and never had any problem.

we have crates as beds in the kitchen for our girls when the pup (now 8m) first came home we crate trained her.One side of the crate was a nice comfy bed (vetbed ) and a training pad on the other side just in case then cover with a blanket to make it den like ....she slept in the same room as our other girl only pup in her crate ,she slept in her crate  for 3-4 nights and then we left the door open but she chose to sleep in thier herself gradually moving on after a couple of days to using our older girl as her pillow!!!!
