Molly's pup Max has been wormed regularly every 2 weeks.  When I took him to the vets for his first vaccination he had been wormed that week, so the vet said to leave it until he was 10 weeks old (next week) when he has his 2nd jab and he would give him some worming stuff then. Anyway, today he passed a really long worm with his poo, so I rang them and said rather than wait till next week I ought to be treating him now, they agreed and I fetched a tablet - Milbemax - gave this to him about 4pm, he's just been sick, 7 p.m. and there was a worm in it!!!!!!!  Never seen this before, does it mean the stuff is working or that he's got loads of worms, really worried because I know worms can be damaging.  What do you think? - he's not eating too well by the way, but his body weight seems OK.

What were you using to worm him with previously.  If it was piperazine or one of theold fadhioned remedies they are not that efficient compared to the newer prodcucts that work on larval forms as well as adult.

Also his mother may not have been well wormed when she was a puppy so had a lot of encysted worms in ehr tissues to pass onto her unborn puppy.

Many breeders are finding with generatiosn of well womed dogs they are finding less and less worms in pups even before worming them.

I would try a different wormer for him next time as this one has disagreed with him.

thanks Brainless, Molly would probably have had worms to pass on to the pups as she was a rescue dog, although we have been treating her.  Don't shoot me, but we were only using Sherleys worming syrup on the pups 'cos that's what the rescue centre gave us to use - found out since it's not really very effective stuff, but it did seem to evacuate the worms.  Update - Max has just done his business, formed OK but lots of worms in it! - will he be ok?!!!!!!!!!!!!

A heavy worm burden can cause anaemia, but with good feding and proper worming he will be fine.

Try Drontal Puppy next time or if he is over 6 months then the adult one.  It is a broad spectrum wormer in teh adult version and is a good idea at his time of year when fleas are around as this is when tape worm can be contracted.

Ok thanks, he's only young yet but will keep a very close eye on him!!!!!  Someone told me today he might be crossed with a Newfoundland because he's got webbed feet, he's 11lbs and 9 weeks old..............I wonder?

I have a Newfoundland and she was 15lbs (6.8kg) at 8 weeks if that's any sort of guideline for you. She's now 16 weeks and 20kg.

That is the weight I would expect a male pup of my bred to be at 8 to 9 weeks old.  They end up at 50 pounds as adults, and 20 1/2 inches at the shoulder.

Oh.............I'll keep you posted on his progress! - I am also in touch with owners of 3 of the other pups so it should be very interesting seeing how they all turn out.
