Since last week when i thought my dog had drank from a lake and got a bug he has slowly got worse, he is just not interested in much and is very very lethargic and wants to sleep/rest all the time.
Yesterday i left him for max 2hrs for shopping and he was fine when i left asleep as usual when i came back he had a very bad limp i took him to the vets this morning who gave him anti inflam tabs for a week and if no change back for an xray in a week as although he shows no pain he was in discomfort when she manipulated his elbow (front left leg) also he has a high temp.
I am thinking the weather has not helped either but this dog bounces from walls everyday regardless and i cant see him injuring himself that morning as no furniture was disturbed as when they play fight my sofa is always at the other side of the room.
Also the vet said he didn't have a natural movement in his back legs and as he holds them very stiff but we'd worry about that another time?
You know how it is you get told something but you worry endlessly when you get home i'm hoping i'm worrying for nothing as its just so sad to see him like this. (He's only 15months)
Has anyone any thoughts?
Hi mygirl not to worry you but i'd tell the vet that you wont worry about it another time and get him checked out the poor sod. sounds like he might have some sort of infection. Tell the vet you wont tests. At first i thought it could be growing pains, what breed is he? If he's not himself then there's something obviously wrong.
Warm regards Susan
Hi Sarah, Hope you get him sorted and back to normal soon, poor little man, sorry, big man :) Is he any better today?

He's still the same Mel :( not playing just prefering to eat then sleep on the sofa.
I've spoken to a good friend who is a vet nurse and she says leave him till tomorrow as the tablets should have kicked in by then if not i'm taking him back it's such a shame to see him like this.
Susantwenty he's a great dane from a sh*te breeder.
the vet said he didn't have a natural movement in his back legs and as he holds them very stiff
HAve you spoken to the breeder about this also what is it your feeding your dane on ?
Margaret

What age is he. Has your vet considered Wobblers?

This is interesting - I had a similar comment from my vet at about the same age as your dog mygirl...

If it were me I'll be asking for X-rays to be done, it can't do any harm. If you are insured you should be able to claim as well.
A total stab in the dark but you could mention weils disease to your vets. With this hot weather rats tend to gather at lakes and the chance of the infection does increase. Its pretty rare but again best safe than sorry.

I took him back to the vets as he just is not happy, he prefers to stand and lean than settle lying down.(It must be torture to get back up i imagine)
I guess they are just not a dog than can cope well on 3 legs :( and look worse than if they were little.
The vet offered an xray but said if its only a muscle strain which she thinks it is then its a waste of money (he is insured) so she has upped his dose to that of what he should be on as she said she under-dosed him yesterday as she wanted him to feel pain so that he would rest it.
So thats shut me up for now.
Thanks all for the help and thoughts it made me that little bit more pushy with the vet:)
My friend said she couldn't see anything wrong with his gait and she judges them so i'm relieved over that one.
