Topic Dog Boards / General / Picking new puppy up on Sat :)

After being disappointed last week with the last breeder I decided to keep looking in case I found a pup and I have got some great news. I have found a puppy I am going to pick her up on Saturday. I contacted the Shih Tzu breeders on Kennel Club websites that had litters either a few weeks ago or recently, and this breeder had 2 boys and 4 girls born in begining of May, so I emailed her and explained I was looking for a shih tzu girl and was wondering if she had any left. She replied that she had 1 and it was 8 weeks old last Friday and she has had one jab already. I am sending her a deposit tomorrow as she has an advert going in the paper for her tomorrow and I have arranged to pick her up Saturday evening. She is only 50 miles from me too so thats not too bad, hope pup will be ok in car.

I am so excited I cannot wait.

Aww that's very nice to hear! I know how it feels to be dispointed by a breeder and have to look around a lot. I should be taking my pup home the 3rd of ausgust! Good luck with your new pup my dear. :)

Thanks Dee, yea me and the two kids agreed on a name finally, lol. She will be called Coco. I liked Cassie better but kids aren't so keen, so Coco it is, want a simple name the dog will recognise.

hi ioxia congratulations,
but be careful on sending a deposit befor uve even seen your pup. as chances are ule love her :) but say you go there and your just not happy with the litter you wont get your deposit back! im sure the breeder wont mind holding her till sat for you as its only 3days away. im sure ule love her tho.do you know wat colour she is?
- By maplecottage [gb] Date 13.07.05 20:55 UTC
Mini Meg great advice - it is slightly strange she is asking for payment up front when you haven't even seen the dog for sure!

Ioxia congratulations on your pup - see if you can carefully get the breeder to wait until you have seen the puppy - would hate to see you lose a deposit.

Not to put a dampener on things, but did you check out theis new breeder with the breed clubs?
- By Ioxia [gb] Date 14.07.05 12:23 UTC
Just to put everyones mind at rest.

Yes this breeder is  KC reg member I got the detauils from the Kennel Club website and just emailed her.

The reason she wanted the deposit I think is because she was advertising her in the paper her advert was due to be printed the following day after i rang her (wednesday) and I told her i definalty wanted her and could i pick her up on Sat as thats the earlist I could get over. She said How certain are you that you want it I said 125% IF you can get that much. I think its to prove to her that Yes I want the dog and Yes I am serious about coming over on Saturday, otherwise she could have re homed her once the advert has gone into the paper.

Also I sent a cheque, she will have recieved it today and if something does go wrong all I have to do is cancel the cheque, so I have not lost anything.

I think it can be quite confusing about the KC membership thing.  I doubt very much this breeder is a member as the Kennel Club actually has very few members, a bit like a London Gentlemans Club you have to be nominated, voted in and pay a large subscription this is totally different to the general public owning a registered dog and being able to register its offspring, this is not membership.  Anyone with such a dog can register a litter providing they meet a very loose criteria.  Similarly anyone registering a litter can pay a further fee to have them listed on the litters available list.  There is a limit to how many litters they can put on the list in a year but other than that there is no vetting carried out on these breeders and they do not have to conform to the relevant Breed Clubs code of ethics or recommended health checks.  If she is a KC accredited breeder this is a little more promising as they are obliged to at least carry out the KC recommended health tests and are subject to a, self declared, vetting procedure.  This is why we always say check out a breeder with the Breed Club even if you have discovered them via the KC.  Personally I would never commit a deposit prior to going to see a litter as even when recommended by the Breed Club I would want to see for my self the apparent health of the litter and under what hygiene and socialisation levels they have been reared in.
I don't feel this breeder should be putting pressure on you, after all for the cost of the advertisement she could have run it anyway and just held any enquiries on hold until after your visit on Satuday leaving the whole of the rest of the weekend for anyone else interested to still come if you declined the puppy.

A similar thing happened to use with Leo, we rang quite a few breeders , emailed even more and they had all just sold their last pup or they had some due in a month or were planning on breeding etc - then we got a phonecall from a breeder who was friends with one of the people we rang - she had one sable and white boy sheltie left and we arranged to pick him up on the saturday :) In a way im glad she only had one left, his brother was there but she was keeping him, we checked all was well with his health and that he had had the relevant tests etc but it was love at first site

First thing he managed to do was knock coffee out of OH's hand while we were at the breeders, spill it on himself and then wet himself lol

Yay today is the day. House is ready, stair gates up, dog bed is ready, I have puppy training pads at the ready, all I need is my pup and then I am all set. Roll on tea time when I go pick her up :)
