I am taking my bitch in for an x-ray Thurs. morning to see if she is preg.  I thought she was not pregnant but I heard one heartbeat with a stethoscope today and her first due date is Friday but last time she took from day 12 which would put her due date 4 days after that. She was bred a total of 5 times two days apart so her due date could be 10 days after her first due date.  I also checked to see if she is producing milk and she is.  The strange thing is that she has lost 1.4 lbs since she was bred and does not appear any bigger.  This is a Sheltie I am talking about.

I am wondering if she does show a single puppy, how many of you were successful in whelping naturally.  I know many of them have to be take c-section.  Has anyone every had a bitch go this long without noticing she was pregnant?  I definately knew the last time but she did have 3 pups.  ~~Linda

HI Sheltzee...i have had a couple singletons litter that whelped without problems and one that had to have a c-section..the concern is that they may not be enough of the hormone needed to trigger labor and the puppy will outgrow the placenta and go into distress..or possibly be too big,,they should be able to tell that from an x-ray though..the due date is 63 days after ovulation but if you did not run progesterone its just a guessing game..

I would have reservations.  But give the prospective owners a chance perhaps by asking them to come back a couple of times if that is feasible and start to get to know the puppy - then make the decision based on puppy's reactions during their visits.  If they are too far away, be honest and say that they will need to spend a couple of hours with you before you make a final decision and only then might you let the puppy go with them.

Well, I will be taking her into the vet in the morning to see if she is pregnant with one puppy or hopefully at least two.  I will let you all know.  ~~Linda
