Our two "house dogs" at the moment are Beau and Freya. Now in this hot weather, the "kennel" dogs have found themselves nice cool spots to lie in - and are peaceful and cool while it is hot. Obviously, they were all exercised earlier, whilst it was cool.
However, Beau and Freya are still rushing around like mad - Freya panting like a steam train

They can come inside, into the nice cool utility room or kitchen - but they prefer to be rushing around outside still, playing with tuggies, balls etc.
I think that if they were uncomfortable they would stop, so don't want to shut them inside - but what do you do?
Margot
Hi Margot
Mines are exactly the same but I don't think the weather is as hot here (Scotland!!). I've got a fan in the lounge, all the curtains and blinds are drawn and there's lots of water around. I even have an umbrella for them in the garden but what do they do? They lie on the patio with the sun beating down panting and puffing. I was starting to get worried too but today is a bit cooler and, guess what, they all want to be in the house!! Can't fathom it out but you are not the only one.
I do try to call them in but they just go out again.
Kind wishes
Annie
PS: Edited to add - they have a paddling pool too but do you think they go near it? No way, although Bazil is the first to jump into any sort of water when we are out.

mine have got a paddling pool to play in so they can still play and keep cool ;)
Hi Margot,
Mine are all out in the paddling pool....... although the girls are racing in and out with a ball........
Bubba is just sat there chilling out !!!!!!!
Hope all is well,

Thanks Julie - I'd forgotten all about the paddling pool! OH is putting it up at the moment - and Freya (typical g/niece of Purdey :D ) has already sat down in it & demanded her soap & sponge!! Beau still isn't sure...... - but it's not filled up properly yet!

We tried Toby with the hosepipe yesterday but he wasn't keen!!!
Hi Margot,
Scarlett was a bit like that, unsure......... but we filled it with all her fave toys and now she witters like mad, when it comes out the shed, all excited !!!!! and while she is in it, she is not sunbathing ...........
She is a sun goddess, not ideal with a red coat !!!!!!!!!

Just gave mine a shower with the hose pipe, he's really good with it actually for about 10 mins and then decides enough is enough. I then left him to play in his pool, he is charging around like a dog possessed. Of course, I'm wetter than the dog now though
Be careful not to leave them lying in a the sun, a friend of a friends dog collapsed and died of heat stroke 2 weeks ago, he was sunbatheing feel asleep and collapsed :(
I wouldnt let them lie in the sun

Thanks for that Blondiflops my girls want to run around playing chase from morning till night not put off by the heat but I'm afraid I am a bit of a party pooper and prefer to keep them in the cooler part of the garden in shade where they can go inside or lay ouside where it is cooler I would never forgive myself if I let them exhaust themselves and make them ill or even worse .... in this very hot weather.
I put my two young ones in next doors very large paddling pool last night, neither of them knew what to do just stood there rigid. After a little while Della started moving her front paws but her back legs just hung there. Their going in again tonight.
Personally I decide with mine when they can exercise and when it is too hot and they need to settle indoors. Dogs are like children who play in the snow in a t-shirt and half naked in the sun and burn - they cannot think for themselves it is too hot and could be dangerous so it is down to us to think for them. If they are having so much fun they do not realise they are getting really uncomfortable. By the time they show signs of discomfort it could be too late. I would play safe and use your own judgement when it comes to their safety. :-)

As they were still rushing around at 2pm, I decided that they needed to come into the cool :D

I've had to buy more ice cube trays just to keep Spice happy :D she looks at her water bowl then at the fridge waiting for the ice to be added before she takes a drink? and she hogs the fan in the evening when we are trying to keep cool in the lounge. It's a dogs life in this house :D :D
Jacqueline :)

I've seen several people walking their dogs today :( Poor things, you could see they were struggling.

My dogs demand to be taken out at their usual times, whatever the weather! In this heat we still go out, but it's only a token gesture of a 5-minute stroll so honour is satisfied. They'll settle happily after that, whereas if they weren't taken out they'd be charging around getting stressed and even hotter.
:)
i think rushing round in the sun must run in the genes Margot as tess, bruce and bo all do it, tess and bo are normally to be found in full sun panting like good-uns :D
i find that soaking an old towel and giving it to them to lie on helps to keep them cool as well as numerous fans and paddling pools although bruce went through the side of the paddling pool so it is no more

I know somebody who takes their Lab out with them when they go for a run. They have been doing it in this weather
Stupidity IMHO :)

How are you finding this weather ? When I was in pup with Indigo it was the really hot spell in July and August 2003, it was horrible :(
I didn't even have a paddling pool to go and plonk myself in :D

I'm struggling with the weather at the moment... its making everything a massive effort. I put my little pony Maddie on loan today to a lovely family, and knackered myself up leading her onto the lorry! Am working till Wednesday, then off for a scan for suspected big, breech baby... c-section week after if he is!

Blimey. Good luck with the scan and hope the little monster turns round in the mean time :)
There are some excercises you can do to help it turn naturally or the Docs can attempt to turn but from what I can gather can be quite uncomfortable :( Must admit wouldn't want a doctor man handling me :)
Oh how exciting that it could all happen next week ! :D
Have you got everything ready ?
Have you sussed the problem with Willis out yet ?
By Carla
Date 13.07.05 19:35 UTC
I don't think there is any room for him to turn - he's heading for 10lbplus on the weight estimation!

:D They won't try to turn him because of the previous section - and I am 38 weeks on Sat.
No, Willis remains "excitable". My dane friend reckons he's probably scared, the big wuss :D I have been watching him when the kids have friends round though and he does the same excitable sniffing until he has checked them out - so I am just going to introduce baby calmly abnd quietly and let him say hello nicely :) Have also bought The Culture Clash - might give me some tips :D
PS - he's learned to open the new baby gates - so another idea bites the dust!

Poor you, Chloe :( 22 years ago I was expecting my son in a very hot July. He was due on the 11th and finally made his appearance (after a little help) on the 30th. I spent most of my time in the cold shower :D And he was my first, so I didn't have anybody else (let alone horses and GDs) to look after - so my sympathies are with you :D :D Let's hope that it turns cooler soon :)
Daisy

Lawks! The Boy was breech (about the most awkward breech possible - spine-to-spine, with his feet by his ears) and there was no way he was going to turn! Hope young Archie ;) turns out to be the right way up!
Stay cool ... :D

That's just stupid in this weather - it's bad enough when it's cool, because the dog can't tell the owner to slow down, and is made to run too far. :(
Agree completely!!! My dogs were harrassing me at the beginning of the week to go out at their usual time in the afternoon but calmed down after a while. I did take them out yesterday afternoon for a 5 minute stroll at the woods. I think it's psychological. They don't seem to know they've only had 5 minutes and are quite happy to go home and sleep the rest of the day! Funny things dogs!
Annie
My two are laying on wet tea towels, the one likes the tea towel draped over her back, she looks so funny walking around, they wont go in a pool at all. not all shar-pei like the water.
I sat in the pool though lol.
Mine go out with the bike for fitness for agility but only late evening after 8/9pm and not on hot days. We had a walk round the park tonight with a frisbee but it's foggy! In fact it's not been that hot at all today.
We take millie out at her usual time after i've dropped off my daughter at school, but we have a great big lake where we walk and as soon as she's off her lead all you hear is SPLASH she loves water and if she didn't have a swim with her walk i'm sure she'd only think she'd had half a walk.then she goes out about 8pm but we've left it till about 10pm in this hot weather.usually theres no one about so she can go off her lead.
I thought it was dangerous to let dogs go in lakes in the summer because of that blue algea thing that is fatal if they swallow it.
ive had to leave meg at home this past couple of days wile ive gone to my mums as its been to hot to walk her but on the days i have took her ive put her in the paddling pool to cool her down and sat in the shade with her, because no matter how hot it is she refuses to leave me so i have to stay in the shade to keep her cool! :)
