Hi all just need a little help in the right direction as my pup is still eating his own poo he has been on copraphagia tabs for three weeks doesnt make a difference he gets to it so fast i cant get to clear it up he screams to get to it too surely there is something i can do? or could there be something missing from his diet? i read that it could be the reason he is on jwb as i was told its one of the best foods on the market any help would be appreciated?

no one really knows why some dogs do this, there are several triggers etc.

How do you behave when he goes to do it?

If he sees you as "competing" for the poop he will just try to swallow it all the quicker, it might be best to show no interest in this behaviour at all and you may find it disappears before it becomes an ingrained, learned and well practised behaviour/habit.

I know it is difficult to not get tense about this but I believe if you show the dog it is highly valuable to you ie you want to remove it asap, it will become more important to the dog.

Just a thought.

So if you call him does he leave it then?

Cos if you treat him for coming after he has eaten the poop...... well you can see where I am coming from can't you.......

No i dont call him in and treat him if he has eaten it only if i see him go and stop him eating it
Its just when i don't see him go he eats it because i can smell it on his breath :( not nice

Just thought there maybe something else i could try as the copraphagia tablets dont seem to be working

Well one of the reasons for coprophagia is that there is undigested food in the poop and so the dog is just recycling.

If this IS the case with your dog you could either change the diet to something which is more digestible and has less undigested grain at the other end or you could try supplementing his diet with digestive enzymes which you can buy OTC in any health food shop.

Buy a multi spectrum one.

Dogs are not equipped with the enzymes to digest grain and so they bacteria has to get to work in the gut to do it (hence why you MAY get wind in some dogs).

Pineapple contains the enzyme bromlain which is why it can put dogs off.

Otherwise it is just a habit that he will hopefully grow out of.
