This has been a horrible few days.

Kitty (beautiful black/tan American Cocker) was 5 weeks in whelp when disaster struck. She was not well on Monday morning, very lethargic, unable or unwilling to stand up let alone move. I wanted to think it was just the warm weather, but my instinct told me it was more than that. Off we went to the vet that morning, they were not happy with her either, so we had to go up to Alnwick to the main surgery. Kitty stayed in all day, for scanning, blood tests, anti-biotics and a drip.

The first update was that there were two dead whelps and another that appeared ok but they couldn't find a heart beat. I brought her home and she was a little brighter, but she had to go back on tuesday morning for another scan of the 3rd puppy. Still no go, and it was supposedly too big to be re-absorbed, with her white cell count being very high the thoughts were, that there was a serious infection going on so I was advised to have her spayed.

Now that it is done, she's picked up alot, and I can now relax a bit in the knowledge that she's safe, but I'm completely wrung out. Anybody that ever thought breeding was easy, forget it. Your heart gets ripped out, so many things can go wrong.

I'm at the 'never again' stage.

Kitty has just told off next doors window cleaner, so life goes on. Go babe!!

I'm so sorry, it is so dissapointing when something that should be all about hope and joy goes so wrong :(  How lucky Kitty is to have such a tuned in and caring owner to react so quickly and positively to prevent what could have been a serious risk to her health.  I think you should take pride and consolation in that at least and I hope she continues to recover as well as she seems to be doing.

So sorry.  Ain't life a b*tch!!  Pleased that Kitty's OK.  Thank heavens you knew what you were doing.  If she hadn't got a knowledgable owner, who knows what may have happened. :(

Unfortunately it seems that knowledgeable and caring owners are the ones that have this happen to them!

Oh Dawn how awful, thank goodness Kitty has you.

Within the last 2 weeks, 3 of my friends have just gone through similar. (one lost her bitch through vets incompetence)  And now, just waiting on Emma coming into season, I am now seriously have second thoughts.  I could not bear the thought of anything happening to her.

On a lighter note, glad to hear Kitty still keeping those tradesmen under control ;)

i know what you are going throw brie lost her litter 4 weeks ago,and another litter 3 years ago.but like youi still got my bitch which mean alot.can i though it was the heat with her,

i have done a lot of seach with brie and what happen to her and the 1st lot of pup which die at 3 weeks and the last lot were born alived but faded after 12 hours,

canine herpes can cause kennel cough which she had with her first litter and we thought the puppies had kc,
the ch virus stay in the body and rise it ugly head when the bitch is stress, low. ect, brie started hacking again just 2 days aftre this last litter, all the sign of ch which attack the repsirtaroy system,

so we are talking to two vet about her history at the momen and weather to mate her again using the canine herpes vacc

I was so sorry to read this. And I do feel for you so pleased Kitty is well though and barking at next doors window cleaner and any other intruders would be a full time occupation for her.

Take care Karen

I'm so sorry to hear this Dawn.  It is so heartbreaking to have this happen.  I fear this with every pregnancy.  My thoughts are with you.
