I have a 14 week old Dobermann puppy who we were thinking of showing. However....we also have 4 cats one of which took offence to his sniffing and has subsequently torn his ear, this has left a white scar about an inch long. Does this mean that is the end of his showing career or are there some tricks of the trade??? it isn't really a big deal as first and foremost he's a pet.
very receptive to any ideas.
sorry just realised I've posted it in the wrong area

I've got an 11 week old German Shepherd puppy who doesn't get on at all with my Tom cat (3 years old)- they hate each other- I'd only had her 3 days when he scratched her eye- luckily though it wasn't her actual eyeball it was the inner eyelid. Because cats catch mice and birds etc you can imagine the germs etc on their claws, it's so easy done and so if they do scratch the eyeball you're talking loads of money for eye specialists etc- you can imagine the infections possible from a cats scratch. It's been 3 and a half weeks now and the two of them just aren't getting any better- I'm kinda hoping that they'll learn to live along side one another rather than together and just come to a mutual respect thing between them but here's to hoping eh:)

Hi Stacey, at first my cats really hated him, but over the last week or two the cats seem to have if not accepted him then certainly tolerated him, but he doesn't realise his own weight. Poor little bugger only wants to play, but he's slowly learning.

That's it their weight- my cat weighs 3kg compared to Kassie who's 9kg:) Cats are such temperamental little things aren't they;) What colour boxer have you got? And what have you called him:)

Sorry Stacey you misundertood me, I have a Dobermann called Dante and he weighs in at 15kg at the moment, how he grows so quickly I'll never know as he seems to lose more than he eats when he goes to the loo!!!

Sorry- Why did I get it in my head that he was a boxer

I can't believe the rate the larger breeds grow at either:) Kass fit on my knee on the way home when I picked her up she didn't on Monday when she had her jabs- She's about an inch higher than my knee when stood next to me:o I weighed her at 9 wk 2 days to worm her- she was 5kg, then I weighed her on Monday when she was bang on 11 weeks- 9kg- all this in just under a fortnight!

It's official - The Mockodile will be known henceforth as Fatso as well. Took him to the vet this morning for worming tablets and at 7 1/2 months, he is 32 Kilos and I am in trouble with the vet nurse :( Apparently at this age he should be 28 kilos ish and should be 35 or so when fully grown - OEhrrrrrrrrrrrr !
Bit of a nightmare really as we don't give him any titbits from our plates and he only has Pedigree Advance twice a day and the odd biscuit. Although I think I didn't really take the castration into account (I was warned that he would put on weight quicker. I was asked haughtily if I kept to the feeding guides on the packet and I am pleased to say that I was able to answer truthfully, that if I DID keep to those feeding guides he's be even fatter as I only give him about 3/4 of what they reccommend - :p And there lies a warning to us all !!!!!!

My friends Rottie bitch is overweight- quite a lot too! Bloody heck Beth 32kg at 7 1/2mth- does he still act like a baby too trying to get on your lap and stuff:D This is why I'm not letting Kass on my knee or getting her too used to being picked up- I have to keep telling myself that she's going to be an awfully big dog. Actually at the vets on Monday he said she's going to be a big dog (I'd have thought that obvious considering she's a GSD:p  ) to which I replied that I know she's going to be big but I wouldn't think overly big- if you follow me. He said, he thinks she'll be very large especially for a bitch:o Lets hope her brain grows quickest because I'm not sure I could handle her antics if she were big;) Tell me a bit more about the recommended feeding guide- to follow or not to follow?

Hahahaha. The worst thing is that to me, he looks solid but not fat. He doesn't look thin but he's certainly not lumbering around if you know what I mean. The girl at the vets told me to cut down his food by one third ?????? so that's what I'll do and then I'll blame them.:)
And by the way, he does TRY to get on my lap but he can't :p
As for the food thing, I'll weigh it in a minute and let you know what they say and what I give exactly but I know that it's less than they recommend. :D :D It appears to be yet another marketing ploy, the more you feed obviously the more quickly you need to buy another sackful of the damn stuff!!!!!!!!
Bye for now

Here goes then :
I give Jake 500g a day, made up of 2 x 250g servings
Here is the recommended:
Breed's ADULT weight 6 months 9 months
25 kilos 510g 465
30 kilos 620 540
40 kilos 830 665
Okay, so based on a Dobe who should be 35 kilos when adult (according to their chart) then how is it going so wrong ????? Am I missing something

And honestly, he doesn't get any food from us from our plates (and it's only me and the illusive old man who's hardly ever here, it's not like kids are feeding him when I don't know or anything) and gets about 2 or 3 biscroks a day as well.
Something's obviously afoot here. Maybe he eats 1kg of grass, bushes and plants from the garden every day LOL

He might be eating the grass? Then again when so much comes out of there back end- how can they still get this big;) Kass is on 320g per day in 4 meals compared to a recommended 330g and this is for an 8kg dog? Do you honestly think the recommended guide's too much? What get's me with these charts is that in the 3-4 months column the recommended for her weight is 290g? Surely they need more food at this age as they're going to be burning off a lot more once they can go out etc

Maybe it's just to build them up for the first few months in life that they lower it but I think it seems silly- I suspect that if I fed Kass any less when she reaches this 2nd stage she'd act as though she were starving to death- she does that now

I've just emailed you her photo? Hope you like the edging round it- it took the non computer expert me from 12pm to 4:16pm trying to scan it, save to a jpeg and do some fancy bits:) I wanted to do that where you kinds fluff all the edges up if you get my meaning but couldn't manage it (didn't have a clue what I was doing really;)) so I opted for that instead which is already set you just need to apply it- and you thought I'd got all clever doing that myself:D

Holly is fed on complete food as well and receives less than she should according to her current weight. The guidelines suggest 90 - 150g per day and she only has 80g per day. She's a very fussy eater in that she doesn't eat a lot so I'm pleased that she eats that much, she also has 3 meals a day still as she won't eat a lot in one go.
Every morning she has a small bowl of milk, a couple of fl oz, and at the weekends she has a bowl of porridge for breakfast and misses out one of her complete meals.
Despite the low ammount of food she eats she's still a bit cuddly, but until her coat is ready to be pulled it's difficult to know how much is fat and how much is fur!! It does feel as if she's still got some spare flesh though so I think we've got the food levels just right.
Fun isn't it!!!

i dont think any judge would knock you for a 1inch scar.---however if you're CAUGHT using mascara or anything else youd be banned from showing :(
By Kash
Date 11.06.02 23:30 UTC
I didn't know they'd completely ban you:o If this happens why do so many top breeders etc risk it

surely they'd be better off not doing it rather than risk being banned. Is that banned from all shows?

Hi Dantesmum
I have a 7 1/2 month old Dobe called Jake (referred to on here mainly as "The Mockodile" as he was a snapping barrel of monkeys for a long time after we got him!!)
On day 2 of being here with us, my black cat ripped his ear too so it seems we may have a matching pair (although for your sake, I hope not, behaviour wise :) )
We had to keep him & the cats seperate for a couple of months as Jake didn't seem to get the fact that if he ran at the cats, they went for him (he only wanted to play as he was brought up with cats that DID play with him !!) After a couple of months we let them in together and that night was fun :D :D They don't exactly love each other but they will now tolerate each other as long as each gives the other space to pass etc. Nowadays, he is obviously older and wiser (in the cat sense at least :p) and now seems to remember that it is not a good idea and when they want to go past, he backs off !! If he forgets, one hiss is all it needs to remind him !!

Hmmmmmm and the problem is, I was trying to cut down. I actually smoke fewer fags per hour than I used to when I went to work BUT am awake for longer so it works out more (especially @ w/e's when I used to sleep till 2pm. Noone's told Jake that 7.30 on bank hols, Sats & Suns, is not condusive to mummy's health. :D :D

Hi Beth - Don't know if this is any help but when we got Salem (the Daft Dobe), the breeders specificaly advised us NOt to feed Pedigree food. Apparently it contains quite a high fat content and they told us that they only used it when a dog was poorly or needed bulking up for shows?!! Don't know how right it is but Salem is fed on Beta comlete and he looks great on it. This is what they recommended for him to have and we have never changed it. Might be a thought to put to Christine? :)
How is the Mock shaping up now? Our new pup is due to be born tomorrow so we'll be back to square one again soon!!:D
Best wishes

He was on Beta when we got him and without being too graphic, it started pouring out of him :(
Then we tried JW (produced the stinkiest mockodile in the world - the old man had to get a gasmask :D), then Wafcol which was great for a while but then he started the old trots again and he is fine in every other respect on the Pedigree. To be honest, I'm just grateful he now produces poos that I at least MAY have a cat in hell's chance of picking up :p

Hi Beth
It's good to know there's someone else out there with a naughty dobe!! He seems to have good and bad days with the nipping, one day he's angelic and the next......though looking at Dante right at this moment he's sound asleep and looking very cute, until he wakes of course

Congratulations on Dante - good choice of breed :) I have a Dobermann called Salem who is now 21 months old, but who is just as daft as ever!! :D :D Beth N has a Dobe (Jake or the Mockodile depending on how he is behaving - right Beth :D) and Christine (Kerioak) Breeds them so you are in good company.

Hi,
I am in the process of trying eyelash dye on exactly the same problem, Sasha used to stick her nose up the cats bum and he was not keen and scratched her nose, lo and behold long thin white line grew back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will let you know the results (my only fear is that she won't stay still long enough and it will smear all over the house).

I thought Dobermanns were clever.....doesn't matter how many times the cat takes his face off, he still piles in there for more
