I am considering purchasing a Miniature Husky that I found advertised in Idaho. I have emailed them for more information but haven't heard anything yet. I am contacting you to see what you know about this breed. I have found very little information on the internet. It does say that they can be registered but not AKC. Please help me with more information. This would be a great dog for my family if it is ligit. We have wanted a Siberian Husky for a long time but are worried because they have a reputation of running off and not being able to find them. They have too courious of a personality, I guess. We would go to training classes but I'm not sure if that would control a Sibe. I am desperate for information before I go to look at this breed. It is only a couple of hours away but how am I to know if they are a reputable breeder or not. I am anxious but concerned.

I would imagine that a "miniature husky" would have all the traits of a husky, he is just smaller.  I would think twice about paying good money for a dog that can't be registered by AKC.  As far as I am aware this is not a breed and it may even be a cross-breed!!  Think very carefully about this.  If you feel that the Sibe Husky is not for you then the breed as a whole is not for you.  Take time out and look at different breeds that you feel WILL suit your lifestyle and needs completely.  There are lots out there without lining the pockets of people who, in my opinion, are trying to make a fast buck!!!Good luck

Would this be an Alaskan Klee Kai by any chance?

Are they classed as miniature huskies?  Do you have info on the breed?  I've never heard of them.

Thanks for that.  What lovely dogs they are!  I can't get over the number of new breeds appearing.  I thought I knew quite a lot about different breeds (not their characteristics just what they look like etc.,) but every day is a learning experience to me now.  Thanks to CD!!!!

Read the link but can't find any info on BREED STANDARD, esp how big they are, the photos seem to show dogs of differing sizes

Personally, if I wanted a dog that had the look of a husky but was a miniature I'd go for a Japanese Shiba Inu :D :D

Or a Norwegian buhund (A general farming dog, but still quite inderendat), Norwegian Elkhound (biased here as my breed, can be off lead with trainign and choosing the right places), (Keeshond (much fluffier, but least likely to be a problem off lead).

Shiba's are lovely dogs, but in common with other Asiatic Spitz are rather different to theri northern cousins, more in common with the Akita and the Chow.  Also they may be small but are primitive and dog dominant generally to their own sex, and real escape artists.

All Spitz breeds (and all dogs in my opinion) need a dog proof enclosed garden.

What ever you do go through a bred club to get a loist of reputable breeders to cfontact.  You do not want to line the pockets of Puppy Mills where the cahnces are the pups will not be reared in an environment coducive to fitting them into family life. 

Their mothers will be overbred and unsocialised, just breeding machines.  The chances are also high that the dogs will be of poor breed type and possibly poor health and temperament.

Reputable breeders health test theier breding stock to reduce the chances of heritable disease, rear their pups with care and love, and are very careful to home them where they think they have the best chance of a lifelong family home.

They will also be striving to breed pups as close to the bred standard in looks and temperament as possible.
