Hi
My 7 month old puppy has had her first season (3 weeks ago) and on the very same night she got this she started to wet herself, she still does proper wee's but she leaks wee during the night, or if she is asleep etc, this has been going on for three weeks now, even though the bleeding stopped already. She doesnt seem as swollen as she was, but i wonder if anyone can tell me if this is normal, we rang our vet after abotu a week and they said it was fine, but its a lot of clearing up!!
should we take her to the Vet?

Yes it could be a pyrometra(although she is young a friend nearlt lost their young bitch two months ago with the same symptoms) she needs to be seen asap

Could it be Cystitis? It might be a good idea to take her to the vet to be checked, young bitches often get cystitis at some point, and leaking urine/dribbling/weeing in the wrong place is often the only sign at first. Better be safe than sorry ;)
I don't think it is pyometra,as this tends to affect older bitches about 5yrs but saying that it is not uncommon in younger ones.
pyometera usually occurs 4-6 weeks after a season, and there have been cases of bitches suffering with this after there first season, but they will show these other signs particularly excess thirst, frequent urination, abdominal distention, vomiting, inappetence, shock and death.
There are 2 types of pyometra open and closed. In open cases there is a thick red-brown,evil smelling discharge from the vulva. In closed cases there is no discharge and the animal is much more acutely ill.
Treatment,if you think your bitch may be suffering from this condition you must seek veterinary advice immediatly.
as a hsterectomy may be necessary.
Has your bitch showed any other symptoms?

Sally,
Its not completely unknown for a bitch to have Pyometra during the first weeks of her first season

unlikely - but not completely unknown ;) Nor is it always a case that there would be the other symptoms, some bitches have Pyo with no other symptoms other than the owner thinks something might be amiss - a gut feeling with nothing else to go on, sadly by the time some are showing symptoms its already too late :(
These scenarios
are rare, but they do happen and its always better to be safe than sorry with a bitch :)

Yes good idea to get her vet checked to be on the safe side, but it is probably just because she is under the influence of progesterone. Bleeding usually stops well before the season is over. Not always and all bitches are different in this, but the influence of hormones could be causing the leaking. Make sure you draw no attention to this whatsoever.
Dill,
I didn't say that it was unknown for a bitch to have pyometra after a first season,if you read my post properly.

Nor were you giving full information about it, the tone of the post was that it was probably not something to worry about, we are not vets and it is dangerous to try and diagnose over the net, even a qualified vet wouldn't attempt that. The best anyone can do where its possibly serious is to recommend the vet asap
So if i didn't think it was serious did i say if you thought it was this to consult your vet immediatly if you like i will post the full facts on pyometra

I know the full facts on Pyometra, including the fact that it can be present during the first season and it can kill before symptoms are apparent. There are those who don't read whole posts to the very end and it would be irresponsible not to recommend the vet for any bitch who didn't seem right. Its easy to give advice on the net when the consequences fall to others and can be devastating.
