When i went to London the other week i got charged fifty pound if i pay within fourteen days or a hundred and increasing if i dont pay, does anyone know where you are supposed to pay the congestion fee in London because it's not like you go through a toll.  Also how much is it if you pay the congestion fee in London while your there?

Warm regards Susan

Paying online is the easiest.  If you live in greater London you can also pay at the newsagents.  I go in once a week, and forgot to pay once - never again :(

Didn't realise it was going up so soon, Daisy.

Its a disgrace paying congestion fees etc and still having to pay road tax

My sympathies!

MY OH got caught out with this a while ago whilst visiting to see a Uni, and he had thought he had everything worked out re any charges :(
It was a nasty surprise for us.

Me to i  couldn't believe when i seen the letter, picture and everything of my registration.  Me and my father were commenting aswell how quiet London was, only to my suprise when that came through the door.  Thanks for replying everyone, they should have big sign posts saying pay congestion fee here, especially for people visiting.

Warm regards Susan

With all due respects, its hardly a secret that when you travel into centre of London there is a congestion fee. Its has been hugely publicised thruout the world, other cities are monitoring it with a view to implementing it themselves, as its the first of its kind.
For someone with internet access the info is easy for you to access and act upon prior to your journey, as is the info re fines if you havent.
I just typed congestion charge into google and got up a whole page of links explaining how to pay.
Personally, i think the congestion charge has been the greatest thing for London, and should be rolled out in all major urban transport troublespots. Its a fact it has reduced congestion, improved travelling, and any such iniatives go toward helping the environemnt.
Toll booths would be an irony, as they would create congestion. However, there are big round red congestion zone boundary markers painted prominently on the roads.

my opinion, anyway

with all due respect not exactly the first thing that pops into your head when considering visiting London whether it be business or pleasure we travel to London by train usually we went by car the last time but thankfully didnt enter the zone so were ok but didnt think about it before hand !!!

Susan.... another one down to experience I guess.
- By susantwenty? [gb] Date 07.07.05 20:31 UTC
Thanks Starryeyes, with Clutha i never had a clue about congestion charges i dont live there and i dont watch the news that much because it depresses me with all the negative stuff they never seem to put anything positive on there and i dont watch because it bores me to death.  Ignorance doesn't pay i know, and thats why i've ended up with a fifty pound penalty.

Warm regards Susan

Have to say Susan I agree with you, I haven't a clue where it's charged from.  Also it's a pain when you stay at a hotel in London and you can't even park your car outside withuot getting a ticket

"http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/congestion" BBC site
"http://www.cclondon.com/infosearch/dynamicPages/WF_ZoneCheck_W.aspx"
Transport For London site (TFL). They manage they congestion charge scheme
"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Congestion_Charge" wikpedia is the online encyclopedia for anything

these have the routes. interestingly, as I didnt know this before, on wikpedia it shows pictures of major London street signs carrying the congesation charge logo too.

The good thing about the Congestion charge is that it stops everyone driving in and parking their cars outside their hotel or wherever and cluttering up the roads!  Public transport in London is pretty good really - it is the volume of cars that slow the buses down.

I personally think that the only people who need to drive in London are those who live there and those whose work means they have to carry anything that makes public transport a no no.  I worked in London for years and have visited with my children often and I can honestly say public transport is less stressful than driving, and as fast.

Clutha - you're right, there are huge great 'C's on the road and signposts when you enter.  In addition there are signposts warning that you are approaching Congestion Charge Zone in x miles.
- By susantwenty? [gb] Date 08.07.05 18:22 UTC
Yeah but it doesn't tell you where you should pay does it, unless you live there you'd know where to pay.

Warm regards Susan

errrr? what you are on now, the internet! i only just posted the links above your post. it is quite simple to type "congestion charge" into google. try it now.
- By Natalie1212 Date 08.07.05 19:25 UTC
Clutha, I don't think there is any reason to be rude, susantwenty was saying when she got into London she knew she had gone into the congestion charge zone, but didn't know where to pay. Maybe she could have asked someone or whatever but there is no reason to be sarcastic!
- By susantwenty? [gb] Date 08.07.05 19:50 UTC
There's no need to be rude, my computor wasn't working when i went to London, so do me a favour keep your nastieness to yourself, miss i think i know it all.  It's good you putting the links on but i went three weeks ago.

Warm regards Susan

susantwenty, you're right in that it's not obvious where you have to pay - cynic that I am, I can't help thinking that it's part of this ill thought out idea.  The only thing they seem to show any level of efficiency is collecting the money!
I'd pay it quick though, they won't give up and you'll end up with double the bill :(
I nearly got caught again this week - didn't have time to do it before I left, and nearly forgot when I got back.  Fortunately, I'd put a large notice on the fridge to remind me!
- By susantwenty? [gb] Date 08.07.05 20:19 UTC
I know i've only got to post it now thank god i'm still in the 14 days, and i'm definitely not letting it get any higher.

Warm regards Susan

Im not 'miss not it all', as what i know the nation generally knows, and im a man. LOL
Sorry, probably was a little sharp. Apologies.
However, with all due respects, you say you arent interested in watching the news and keeping yourself  informed on changes that affect your life. Thats fair enough, and your right.
But you cant, in all honesty, then complain about the authorities of London for the consequences of this decision, surely?
Before they even started the congestion charge, and once it started, it was widely published as a national news item. It was a huge controversy, as was the man who thought of it as part of his campaign to become the first major of London, Ken Livingstone.
Its like Tax, everyone knows about it, and once you do, everyone does hold some responsibilty for thmeselves to find out the practicalities for themselves?
As long as the information is readily accessible and available.
Which it is (and for tax, for that matter), as this thread has demonstrated thru many websites, street and road signs.

warmest regards in return, clutha

Hi Susan,

Des posted his off straight away, we both agreed it was a "fair cop" as it were :P
One of those cases where ignorance is no defence. Still annoying though! But he was annoyed with himself more than anything.

We could just have done without "losing" that money right now :(
and will definitely be more careful in future.

I'm not complaining Clutha, out of curiosty after my penalty charge came through the post i wonted to see how much it was, if i would of payed while i was there.  I did know there were congestion charges but while we were there it completely slipped my mind so i forgot.  So people learn by there mistakes, i just didn't know where you payed, but i do now.  Your reply weren't just off, i think it was abit rude really especially as you dont even know me, there's no need for it at the end of the day i've learnt my mistake and it cost me fifty pound and i'm sure there, making a mint from other people who make the same mistake as me everyday, so there's no need for nastieness.

Warm regards Susan
