I have always fed them seperately. The last attack happened when we were just sitting at the kitchen table having eaten a meal ourselves.

Hi guest if your spaniel is becoming aggressive to the pup while there's food around the best thing to do is lock them both out while your eating. Then the spaniel wont have anything to protect while he waits for a morsel of food to fall.  I was having the same problem with my bullmastiff around food she would attack the other dogs, so now i feed them separately and they go out while where eating it stops all the hassle.

Warm regards Susan

Many dogs will become food aggressive- it is wise to feed them seperately and to give treats/scraps seperately to avoid any arguments

WOW susantwenty,

I've heard of reading between the lines but that is amazing.  Guest didn't mention a spaniel or any other breed :D :D :D

Susantwenty gives excellent advice!
None of ours can even be in the kitchen with each other when i am cooking ( a rarity :D ) They will compete like hell.

Dill, I think this guest's post is a follow up to another they posted also called "older dog attacking puppy" in which the guest says the older dog is a spaniel.  That's how susantwenty knows :)

:P

I'd probably get a reputable behaviourist in to be honest. There are books on how to prevent resource/food guarding (by Jean Donaldson) but this could escalate, esp. as the pup gets older - he will most likely start to retaliate as he grows in confidence. Anyone advising really needs to see the home environment, canine body language, etc. Try www.apdt.co.uk for a trainer - some may have a behavioural interest. Or, www.ukrcb.co.uk, or www.apbc.org.uk. Some insurance companies will pay for behavioural advice.

Hope things improve :)
