First of all you need to make sure your bitch is on the correct day of her season to accept the dog and mate with him. She will show signs of being ready by being flirty with him and moving her tail to one side when he licks her. If she sits down, snaps growls etc she is not ready. Bitches usually start to "stand" for mating from around 10 days from the first day they start bleeding and usually ovulate around day 12-14 but all bitches are different, some will stand early others will only stand for a very short period when they are most receptive to the dog. Small dogs like yorkies need very little help or interference to mate, except perhaps your presence there to reassure the bitch if it is her first time and she may need to be held on a lead as well. Why dont you join and then you can ask as many questions as you like :-)

From what I've read, the toy breeds can be the hardest to mate!

Guest, have you contacted the breeders of your dog and bitch for help and advice? Failing that, the breed clubs will be full of specialists.

reading isnt the same as experience though, terrier breeds normally mate quite easily, provided they are healthy and at the right stage of their season :-)

I'd agree with you entirely, except that Yorkies (being toys) are very different to other terriers! ;) Often the dog is smaller than the bitch, so needs holding all during the mating, and it takes another pair of hands to hold the bitch steady whilst the dog is turned - in many cases the dog's feet don't touch the ground at all during mating!

I agree JG.  I have a friend who breeds Yorkies and the male is always smaller than the bitch.  The smaller bitches are shown but they are not 'brood size' and could not give birth without Veterinary intervention!  Because of the size differential the male always needs a box to stand on! ;)

Also Guest ~ your Yorkie bitch should weigh at least 5 1/2 lb. If they are both tiny I wouldn't even think about it.
Take Care
