How old is the dog by the way? Is he a pup or fully grown and have you had him since he was a pup?

I'm sure there will be better trainers than me along soon :) but basically you need to develop a confidence in this dog about being left. You should start for very short periods of times, seconds even, to leave and return
before the barking starts slowly and gradually you build up the times being very careful to not extend it into the dogs tolerance level before it is ready. I'm sure it helps if you reduce the amount of attention the dog is getting generally and do not allow it to follow you freely around the house for instance.

Hes 10 weeks on sun and Ive had him since Mon

I thought you were talking about an adult dog!! This is perfectly normal behaviour for an unsettled baby puppy, who's just been uprooted from his safe familiar world and is abandoned (in his eyes) in an alien world. Are you leaving him alone all night? Many people find they need the pup sleeping with them (either in their room or they go down to sleep in the kitchen with pup) for a couple of weeks when they first get the pup. When he feels secure and confident he won't mind being left alone so much ...

Ive had him on my bed for the last few nights, tonight is going to be the first night on his own. Hes on his own at the moment downstairs and has been for 1/2 an hour. Hes still barking...

I'm sure the person who'll be popping in to let him out last thing and in the early hours will be able to keep him company.

Im up once in the night at least (ive got an 8week old baby) so its not like hes on his own for 8 hours at a time, its just it takes so long for him to settle at night

I must have got completely the wrong end of the stick here! (Not the first time :o ) I've got the impression from what you've said that you work in a shop overnight, and the pup's left alone during that time. If so, do you take the baby to work too?

Or are you home at night, and the pup only cries when you briefly pop out to the shop?

Yes lol. No I dont work in a shop, he cries when I leave him to go to the shop.
This is perfectly normal for a young pup,we've had our pup since she was 7 weeks old and i used to say to my husband how can something so small make such a noise,we tried as best as we could to ignore it,and eventually put her outside at night in her kennel she cried and barked for about a week, she is around us all day in the house and garden but sleeps in the shed at night.
Can I ask you why you decided to put your dog outside during the night? It just seems strange to me to have her around you all day and outside at night on her own!!!

My dogs have always slept on their own :) well plus or minus other dogs.
We had another dog that lived outside permantly and put her out with him,but he went missing on monday and she is really missing him so she is around us more she was also outside permantly but since he has gone she seems very clingy. She is really missing him,she has been kennel trained since she was about 10 weeks old,but we have such a bond she is a real pleasure to own,she is only out in her bed when we go to bed which is usally around 11pm.
Hi Sally
I wasn't being funny or anything I was just curious. Its just something I have never done but I know people who kennel their dogs but they are permanently kenneled - if you know what I mean? I just wondered how you get on with that. How did your other dog go missing? Was he stolen? What a shame. I hope he comes home soon.
Kind regards
Annie
Hi,We decided to try out having her sleeping in the house last night, she slept on the bottom of our bed, didn't know she was there. So we have been and brought her a nice soft comfy bed this morning and decided she can be the house dog think were over the naughty pup stage.
