Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / BITCH NOT COMING INTO SEASON (locked)
- By DI [gb] Date 11.06.02 14:19 UTC
HI,

MY BITCH CAME INTO SEASON LAST MARCH/APRIL TIME, DURING WHICH AN ENTIRE BORDER COLLIE MALE PAYED PARTICULAR INTEREST IN HER, I DIDN'T WITNESS MATING BUT THE VET THOUGHT SHE WOULD MORE THANK LIELY BE IN PUP. LUCKILY SHE WASN'T, BUT IVE BEEN WATCHING HER VERY CLOSELY, AND SHE HASN'T HAD A SEASON SINCE, I MAY HAVE MISSED ONE AT THE END OF LAST YEAR, BUT SURELY SHE SHOULD HAVE COME IN AGAIN BY NOW.

ANY IDEAS OR SUGGESTIONS?

Assuming she is not a Basenji yes she should, the vet will check her over and give her some hormone if needed. Come to think of it even a Basenji should be getting on with it by now. JH

Depends on what breed. Our girl is a whippet and she has only just come in now with her first season at 18 months.

Think as this bitch has already had a season then she is already mature and should have had a second season by now, I would suggest that a vet should check her over and if she is OK and the owner wishes she can be given hormones to bring her in. JH

Not necessarily - depends how old she was when she had her first season and what breed she is. The bitches in my girls line apparently average about 18 months or more between seasons. But certainly, if it's not a breed known for long times between seasons it's worth having the vet have a look at her.

Hi Di - are you settled on a stud for when she is ready ? Was her breeder helpful on that score ?
'scuse me being nosy but I remember the posts re studs and hope you've been able to get some help on that score.

hi jackie

thanks for your message, she is a golden retriever, and i have spoken to the vet about bringing her into season, but they inform me it would not be a mateable season which defeats the object really. Suppose i will just have to wait and see and keep fingers crossed she comes in soon

bye for now

Hi, Its just possible that you did miss her in the autmn/winter, in which case she may not be in season for another month or two anyway. If you are really concerned, could the vet scan her for you to check that her uterus etc is in good order, to hopefully put your mind at rest? The only thing that I have known to bring bitches into season is to give them a change of scene for a week or so, though its a bit drastic, its just possible that putting her in kennels or with trusted friends for a week or taking her on a UK holiday with you might work. I have never done it intentionally, but I have re homed some bitches in the past that have come in season "out of sinc" within a few weeks of being in their new home. A vit E supplement will keep her in good fettle in case she suddenly surprises you by coming in season. I start giving mine Vit E about 2 months before they are due in season if they are to be mated. If she has had one normal season the chances are she will come in season again, if she were mine I would have her swabbed to check for infection on day 2or 3 of her season when it eventually starts. Some bitches will have a "silent" season, where there is hardly any sign and in a coated breed may be difficult to spot. It may be an idea to let her meet any male dog once a week or so, to see if there is any interest in her. Good luck.

I have had friends visiting bitches come into season within days after being with one of mine that is in season, and also my own come in early when one of the others is in, so that now they all follow each other in, despite original cycles!

It does seem to stimulate the hormones in the other bitches, quess it has some purpose in the wild, like wet nurses, the bitches who have phantoms being in milk when the mated bitch welps. JH

There has been a study made on human females I believe that suggest that females in a household or in a work group tend to fall into cycle with each other as well. I did find that that was true with the girls I worked with much to my male bosses disgust - he had to deal with 4 females with PMT at the same time once a month. We did try to point out to him it was better that way to have one VERY bad week other wise one of us could have been crabby each week of the month ;)

Hi Di   I am having exactly the same experience.  My two year, three month old Golden retriever bitch was expected to come into season in mid March having had two seasons, the latest in mid June last year with 9 months between her first and second seasons. I too have found a fantastic and proven sire and am planning to mate as my bitch has the best temperament I have ever experienced in a dog (and I have had several).  Based on the replies to your post I am going to take her to the vet for a check and also contact her breeder to see what her mum's cycle is like.

Will let you know how we get on and would like to hear what happens with you.
