Just feed the normal food, feed less and increase your dogs excercise :)

I agree, the easiest thing would be to simply feed less, quite alot less, of the normal food, and increase exersise. You can of course look out for light foods. These have alot less fat in them, and most manufacturers do a light version. There is no need at all to spend £45 quid on dog food.:)

I found feeding less/exercising more doesn't work.  it's AKA starving the dog and this is when they start to eat anythign when out and raid the bins etc etc.  Tried it and relised it failed.  We have our slightly chubby girl on eukanuba light (say what you like about eukanuba our dogs are thriving on it!) and in two weeks we have seen an improvment.  Cutting down her normal food just made her scavendge!

I have heard good reports on RC.  there's no reason why you can't give it ago!

I have had very good results from feeding my greedy girl a "Lite" formula, merely cutting down made her miserable and a pain regarding begging, mugging small children etc.  I would suggest trying the "Lite" version of whatever you are already feeding if they do one.

Decreasing the food intake should result in the stomach shrinking :)

I had a rescue Lab that came to me and she was a big chocolate pudding :) She was terrible for scrounging but she learnt :) She lost loads of weight and hopefully it has addded a few years to her life span :D You do have to be very strict :)

I also think it all depends I suppose on what the dog has been used to eating :)

You are right perhaps if I had stuck it out she would have become satisfied in time, but then she is perfectly happy with her "Lite" stuff, its suits her and it has had the desired effect :)  so there does not seem any incentive to put her (or me ;)) through even a short spell of unhappiness, I guess I'm not built for strict :p

I had to with Cassie as she was a very big porker  She was been killed by kindness of her previous owners but understandable due to the circumstances as they weren't able to get out much due to terminal illness :(

It was well worth the heartache as to see her loose so much weight and be able to go for walkies and enjoy it plus sort out her incontinence problem, it was great :)

I must apply some of this logic to me  :D

ps I don't have an incontinence problem by the way :p

But it is only worth the heartache if there is no alternative.  My girl lost all her excess with no heartache :)

No she had to learn a different way with food as she was used to getting what she wanted when she wanted it. Going back to control and learning new behaviour was part of the what we were trying to do.

Her food intake was not drastically different to our other girls but it must have been like we were cutting her throat :D

I have always kept my Labs lean and take a very keen interest in keeping the weight off :)

Can't be doing too badly having my first two both going to 14 3/4 one of which Min. Now she could have been a size 30 Lab if we had let her eat as she is a very food orientated Lab :D

Ah I see :), my girl is not a bad lass really once we dropped the itty bitty diet and switched to a "Lite" quantity she went back to leaving us alone at meals which only leaves us with the lack of understanding that some picnics are private to be dealt with :)
