Hi Everyone.

My 4 month old puppy is sick everytime we take her out she only has to be in there 5 mins and shes puking.

Is there any tablets etc that anyone can recommend for her? I have to take her on a 2hr journey this wkd and have a feeling we will have to make several stops!!

Thank you

hiya,

i'd suggest not feeding her for a few hours before travelling. If she's travelling on an empty stomach, she should find the travel a lot easier.

i've just checked through previous posts, and there was a recommendation of a homeopathic treatment called 'Cocculus'.....? Why not try her on a couple of ginger biscuits half an hour or so before travelling? Also, i've heard that rubberised matting underneath the dog helps ease travel sickness, although i'm not sure how it works!!!!

pets shops and Pets At Home sell travel sickness pills, but i think the underlying ingredient is ginger, hence ginger biscuits....

i try and keep as much fresh air coming through the car as possible, although i'm lucky that neither of my two get travel sick.

I have had a lot of experience with this, particularly with my latest pup who is now 6 months old.

A word of warning though, what works for one dog, won't necessarily work for another, they are all different.

First of all, I don't advocate not feeding the dog before travel, about 1 hr before travel I feed a few dry biscuits, yes ginger is a good ingredient, but I tend to feed the crystalised form, not in biscuits because of the sugar. Sometimes when a dog has an empty stomach it can just exacerbate the problem.

I also use Bach rescue remedy as it calms them, understandably, they get stressed when they are sick and this often makes the situation worse. I put a few drops of the RR on the nose leather (as recommended by Teri ;) ) not down the throat as it can be to acidic for an upset gut.

There are many homeopathic remedies that you can try, my homeopathic vet makes up preparations for me on a "needs must" basis.

And lastly, if you pup goes in the car on frequent but small journeys this helps greatly.

When we moved 2/3 months ago, we had an 8 hour journey to do, I was not looking forward to it with my then 3 month old pup, but doing what I have suggested above helped her greatly and of course we had lots of stops for her along with plenty of air. She travels in a cage in the estate part of my car covered with a towel.

Ok thank you for your help, think i will try the ginger and will take her out on a few short car journeys before the wkd.

Cheers.

we tried every remedy going with one of our dogs with car sickness and putting her in her crate and covering it so she cant see the traffic whizzing past worked brilliantly she was so relaxed and we talked to her it only took a few weeks and lots of short journeys and she now travels in the boot of the Grand -Cherokee Jeep quite happily .....
