Hello, I have a 4 year old male staffy who is very obidient in all areas except that of whinging & whining. When  we  go for a walk to the shops or something and i leave him outside he whinges so loud that everyone looks even if he can see me in the shop he still does it. The other thing he does is when we are in the car he starts whinging & whining with anticipation of where we may be going, this is getting really bad & very annoying. I have tried giving him treats when he stops for one second after i tell him too but it doesn't work. Any help & suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanks heaps

I wouldn't advise leaving him outside of shops, for various reasons, the main one at the moment is theft ! Not to mention being attacked by another dog, tormented by kids or getting loose & being hit by a car ect, ect.
There are  soooooo many dogs being stolen at the mement :-(
Please have a look at all the other threads on this site & in the newspapers.
If you "feed" his whinging & whining with any attention whats so ever, he'll have got what he wants ;-) Any attention as they say is good attention even when its not possative :D

Thanks for that. I am very paranoid of someone stealing him too, i only ever leave him for a second & even them i'm stressed about it, Staffy's get taken all the time. I also have tried to ignore him but to no avail, but i will keep trying for sure.

I agree - don't leave him outside shops.  But he does need to get used to being left, tied up, without stressing.  At home or in the garden, why don't you tie him up, take one step away.  If he doesn't whine, take a step back and treat.  Take a step away again.  Return and treat.  If he whines at any time, don't look at him, just wait and wait and wait for silence.  As soon as there's a second of silence, return and treat and praise.  Then take a step back again.  When you can do it at that distance, try 2 steps back.  Then 3, then 4 and so on - but slowly, don't rush it.

As for whining in the car, if you can, stop driving.  Don't turn the engine off, just pull over and wait.  Every time he whines, stop driving.  Give him no attention.  As soon as he is silent, start driving again.  (Best to do this in a quiet country road, not on the M25 Ha ha!)  If you arrive somewhere and turn the engine off, and THEN he starts whining, don't get out of the car.  Just sit there and ignore him.  As soon as he is quiet, open the car door.  If he starts to whine, close the car door and wait again.  If he is quiet, open the car door.  Beware - this looks very stupid and take ages.  I think it took us about 40 opening-s of the car door before we had it cracked!!!!!!
