Hi there,
I am a distressed mum of my adorable six month old staffi bitch ( as well as my three wonderful children, of course!), and i would like any advice on why my staffi seems in such pain, she can't sleep , she can't even lay down without yelping and staring the pain out. She has been pacing around the house , then squatting when the pain comes ..have tried lots of positions ,to try and get her to sleep ,but to no avail. Was it this bad for anyone else ?The vet didn't give her any pain relief for post op and she had her op last Thurs ....so surely she must be getting better by now ? I wish she had never had it done at this very moment and wish i could take her pain away.
Hi Jo take her back the vet asap she sounds like she's got an infection and really she's far to young to have been spayed it's supposed to be their second or third season, your right she shouldn't be in that much pain especially after week, also staffs have a very high threshold to pain so she must be in agony. Please take her the vet, i'd phone up now myself to get her checked. Keep us updated on her progress. it's better to be safe then sorry.
Warm regards Susan

Thanks Sue , i rang last night and they said it was just how some dogs deal with the pain. I have examined her stiches and apart from a small leakage they don't look infected, she is eating drinking and opening her bowels fine. She is not running a temp (although she may have a low grade one ) . I am a student midwife, so used to looking at stitches ect..............She is on day three at mo .....it is more the pain that is worrying me .....and her stiffness ...she is supposed to be walking today, no such chance! I am taking her the morning to be on the safe side and to see if i can get any analgesia for her . It was on the vets advice ....neutering at five and a half mths. When i read how old some bitches are .it does sound very young..........but you trust the vet .......don't you ?
Thanks so much for concern, will let you know how she gets on.
Yes i know what you mean you trust the vets but some times they make mistakes, after all they are human, she just sounds like she's in so much pain and it doesn't sound normal to me, even if the stitches are okay it doesn't mean she doesn't have an infection inside. I do hope she's okay in the morning when you go and there's nothing wrong with her but it's worth the check anyway, and i wouldn't say thats how she's dealing with it if she can't even lye down in comfort the poor girl, i hope she gets better Jo. She might just need antibiotics and pain killers. If your not happy with the vets consultation go somwhere else for a second opinion. All the best for tomorrow.
Warm regards Susan

I would take her back tomorrow, you would expect some discomfort in settling down but not to the degree you say.

Didn't realise staffs had a high pain threshold thought it depended on the individual, like us?
The Bull-breeds are reknowned for having a stoic (spelling?) attitude to pain.
I.E. They don't exhibit they are in pain unless it's extreme.
I have such a Boxer bitch that is stoic with pain.
Vets don't normally give rimadyl as pain relief unless they feel the dog needs it, as
it takes longer for the dog to heal up after the op.
My own bitch has recently been spayed but at the same time she had mammary gland
removal. She has had to be on rimadyl (yes I know the awful stories of rimadyl) as her
pain was high and she experienced alot of problems with the mammary gland removal,
which we are still working through now. She has also had to be on synulox (antibiotics).
We are just seeing the light and the end of the tunnel now with progress so hopefully not too many
more vets visits for us.
Hope your bitch will soon be much better.
Kind Regards
Kirstine

Been to vets this am ..........she has been given an injection and some tablet rimadyl for pain. There is no other concerns as far as the vet can see ......she said it could be her internal stiches sticking in her bladder ......just to observe and hope that when the stiches disolve ...so will her pain....YAWN...YAWN .........hopefully the injection will work soon and we can both get some sleep !
What are the horror stories relating to rimadyl ?
Thanks everyone for the advice , very grateful.

Glad she's feeling better Jo
Although must admit we had Hattie speyed recently without any after effects at all- trying to get her to rest and realise she'd had an op was the hardest part ;)
Glad to hear she's okay Jo
Warm regards Susan
