Jeez how many ideas do you have to submit before the KC say that it has not been taken, it is not similar, it does not sound like!!! I am getting a bit angry now with them :(

Generally if you are very nice to them ;-) you can call them on the phone and discuss which ones are avaliable.
I have done it before and giving the " you would be doing me a huge favour" grumble they are pretty good.
Pain I know

I have spoke to a lady who actually process's the affix's and she never mentioned anything. She just asked if I had any others and I said that I had exhausted all my ideas and that was that. I realise that they won't have a list of not taken names but this is really getting me down now. I know they have a list of names that are already taken but I cannot see how this would help - it would only help so that I did not chose one from the list.

The KC publish an affix book so that could save you a lot of time and stress!
As to names, well apart from made up names, as another poster has said, perhaps a place near you would be ok. I looked at place names and then looked t how the names changed over the years. My village for example stated life as Hedda's Homestead, then became Nedreham before finally becoming Haddenham.
Another option you might consider would be to choose aname which means somehing to you and nobody else. My affix is Foxpath because when I finally got around to registering one, I had a large vixen who used to creep into my garden and sun herslf on the hot paving stones in the summer.
Lynne have you tried thinking about things near where you live? Perhaps if your house has a 'name', or your street name, or something you can see in the distance. Maybe not the full name of these things but the first few letters of each name or something - there can't be too many breeders on your street?! ;)
Or maybe something to do with things you like to do or you can remember from the past - perhaps somewhere you have been on holiday, or your favourate film, or maybe an anagram of someones name like if you had a nice Grandma/pa or a very loyal friendship with someone?
Maybe if you spelt out the numbers relavent to an anniversary/birthday? E.g. the FIrst of SEptember NIneteen SEventy = Fisenise - it might not make much sense but at least you will have your affix!
I will keep thinking on what else you could use ;)

I thought of a word to describe my dogs & then spelt it phonetically, I now do this with my dogs call names

11th choice, thats not too bad, Gwen had to think of 30 odd words before she got one accepted. My own was 5th choice.

I must be very lucky as I got my first choice, which wasn't an odd or made up anagram name. when I filled out the form and it said 6 choices it gave me a headache to think of that many. you must of been really stressed out with 11 let alone 30 I think I would have given up.

i think you should try with whatever ideas you have first nuttyhousewife, u never know, u might be lucky enough to get your first choice!! if you dont thats when your going to have to rack your brain!!!!

Are you intending to breed, then?
no plans to breed i just like the idea of my dogs having my name as i am starting to show ,i dont have enough experiance in the breed yet or the time to rear pups but who knows when my kids are a lot older and i no what im doing i may do but not for a lot of years to come

Personally I'd wait until you have plans to breed - it costs around £100-ish to get the affix, and then you need to pay the annual maintenance ... it just seems a bit of a waste of money until you have proper breeding plans, that's all.
:)

Don't know as I got my first choice :D

I am glad I share my mums affix, which is a lifetime one, that she has had for 30 odd yrs, as I had enough stress choosing puppy names.
Good luck.

we wanted to use part of our surname but they wouldent let us so we chose my bitches name and a little village that happens to start with her name . thats how we came up with our afffix :)
It is hard but if you ring up and have some ready to use they will process it that way quickly .

I ordered a copy of the affix book from the kennel club and it was several years out of date so of little or no help whatsoever.. disappointing :-(
We must have been lucky too - got our first choice! :)
I'm glad you got the affix problem sorted out but I had a similar experience just recently.
I wanted an affix and as my last pup had "Sweyn" in her KC name I thought, "Oh, can't be an affix as it's been allowed, will try for that" It happens to be where I live and I picked her KC name. I paid £10 for a directory first and found that it was dated 2002 and the closest it had to the affix I wanted was "Sweynbeau". I applied via the internet and was sent an affix certificate with "Alsweyn" a week later. I rang to enquire why I didn't get my first choice of Sweyn and was told it was too similar to "Sweens" (note, Sweyn is pronounced like SWAY), and that it was less than three characters different. So, if I had spelled it differently, ie Swaeyne, I may have got it!! I was more than annoyed as no where, and I mean no where, does it state on the internet or on their form that there must be a minimum of three characters difference from any other registered affix. So in all, it was a waste of time paying for the affix directory!
I did write a long letter of complaint to the KC and was told that they did their own internal checks applicable to granting an affix. I did go to Trading Standards about this and in their and my eyes, I have bought a service and they are selling a service without disclosing all the relevant information. The KC club also informed me that it would cost me £20 in administration to change the name (even though it had not been published in the gazette or dog papers for objection) if I was not happy with the one granted. I did not take it further as I decided to stay with the affix granted but this may be useful information for any other people out there interested in buying one. I feel a little ripped off by the KC and think it may be worth ringing them first and make full and proper enquiries!

That is such a nightmare Andrea no wonder you are fed up! I was getting a bit short with them in the end as my choices were either the same as, similar to or sounds like - which doesn't give you much choice.
I then went to put the affix on Mollys show name and I couldn't because she already has a stud book number! Never mind at least I can register the puppies.
Hi Lynne,
Sorry for not replying sooner but I've been busy in the garden over the weekend and am only finally catching up with all the new posts on the site!
As time goes on and the more I learn, I am beginning to think that the KC are a law unto themselves and have gotten away with lots of things for far too long!! I don't disput that they are trying and do manage to do good things for the dog world but some of them don't make any sense at all.
It is actually quite insulting that they believe we can't read and tell the difference between two names, or that people who are genuinely interested wouldn't take the time to find out about a line from that Affix.
I think I shall just bang my head against a wall next time as it will be much quicker..lol
Andrea
Hi Lynne (its Helen) - Glad to see youve finally got one picked. We were quite lucky with getting our second choice (well parents 2nd choice they didnt like my option!!)
There are a lot of peoples affix's that arent even readable as words are mixed that much that you end up with a word without any vowels so its impossible to pronounce :)
I used the letters in my 3 girls (dogs) names to come up with choices. I ended up getting my third choice (which actually I liked the most, so can't think why we put it third). Our dogs are Chelsea, Savannah and Telyn. Our Affix is now Chelynnah - it actually uses the Chel from Chelsea, elyn from Telyn and nnah from Savannah (sharing the 4th letter at each place.
We knew if we came up with real words we'd probably end up submitting form after form (a friend of mine went thorugh about 20 before finding one they'd accept), and I liked the idea that our first 3 girls will always be with us in our Affix.

That's a great idea! I tried to get the same name as our website, which is half my name and half my husbands, but they wouldn't have it. I managed to get it through with an 'ex' on the end though - not quite as good but ok!
