Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Help about buying a pup
- By Lehanne [gb] Date 03.07.05 09:20 UTC
i have been looking to buy a staffy pup. I dont want to go to a rescue home because i wouldnt know about the dogs past and would rather spend out money to buy from a breeder, but i was wondering how much would the average staffy puppy be if i went to a breeder?
Thank you

Go to the kennel club website, clidk on breed standards, then Terrier on the list and then Staffordhsire bull terrier.

Print of the breed standard and also contact the secretaries of the breed clubs listed.  They will be able to put you in touch with REPUTABLE breeders (sadly there are a lot that are breeding who are breeding from poor stock without the knbowledge or ethics needed).

the average price for a good KC reg puppy is around £500. A lot of people will say not to but if you look on epupz you can sometimes find good breeders, not everyone who advertises in the free ads is a bad breeder, you will have to check the breeders out and ask lots of questions, and they should ask you lots of questions as well. good luck staffies are a wonderful breed to have :-)

If you do go down the route of an advertised litter check their reputaion out with the nearest breeed clubs.  They will know of reputable breeders and also those to be avoided.  You should of course do your own checks also.

"I dont want to go to a rescue home because i wouldnt know about the dogs past"

Only if it was a stray. About 2/3 rescue dogs are gifted from previous owners, so the centres know all of the histories of a good proportion of their dogs/pups (and cats, rabbits, horses, etc, for that matter).
And if they are a good proper rescue, their dogs would have been behaviourally assessed by qualified staff as well.
Also, if it was a proper pup (as opposed to adolescent), it would have been born at the rescue, or handed in at a very young age.
Therefore, being too young to have "a history", that wouldnt really be an issue.
The new adopter would become the history

Please make sure that the parents are eye-tested unaffected :)

I would be prepared to spend about 500 to 550 for a kc registered staff. Spoke to a man in the park yesterday who has a 5 month bitch staff. He paid 450 for her but not kc registered. He said that the breeder said he could get it done later himself. I said this would be highly unlikely unless both parents were registered but even then I dont know if you can register yourself. He was a bit put out and dont think he believed me. He also said he thought the woman was an agent for other breeders as she had multiple breeds puppies for sale. Sounds like a puppy farmer to me. His little staff was playing with mine who is just coming up to 4 months but he had to pull his off as it started to get very aggresive and was trying to fight. It definately was not playing and makes mw wonder for a pup to be that dog aggresive at that age has any thought gone into temprement when breeding or just pound signs and no research at all?

Not true, I'm afraid. Only the breeder can register the puppies. It sounds as though he's lined the pockets of unscrupulous people. :(

I thought that was the case and did tell him that she was lying but with all the breeds she has and the prices she charges she must make a fortune cashing in on peoples ignorance. He was saying that although not kc registered he had all the paperwork which I took to mean a pedigree but if not kc registered does that mean that the pedigree may not be accurate as she could put anything down. I didnt say this to him as did not want him to think I was criticising his dog.

The pedigree could be complete fabrication, I'm afraid. :(

He could indeed 'register' it with 'the other' registry - but that's of no more validity than a certificate I could design and print off for him. Completely meaningless.

Basically, he's paid about double what he should have ... but I wouldn't recommend telling him - nobody likes to realise they've been conned, and tend to 'shoot the messenger'. :(

No I think I will keep quiet about it. People tend to think you are a know it all and just out to put them down. Thing is I would have been just as ignorant as him a few years ago but since joining champ dogs have learnt a lot.
