Hi All, I was just wondering what i should do with my miniature schnauzers ear's, she is 13 weeks old. I am clipping her myself and i wasn't sure what else needs doing. I heard that i should pluck the hairs out of her ears, is this true? I don't think she'd let me!!!! Her ears are a bit smelly but they are clean and look fine, she doesn't like me touching them and also anal glands do they need doing or only if there's a problem. thankful for any help.

I do pluck the hairs from our westies ears on the advice of breeder/vet, they get used to it try to incorporate touching her ears and other sensitive places like feet into playtime and give a treat and praise when she lets you. As for anal glands i dont think they need regular attention only when needed. (if it aint broke dont fix it)

Thankyou for advice, i will keep on trying to get her used to touching her ears. Do you just pull them out 1 at a time and she has alot of hairs quite far down her ears do i take these out too. Possiably the trick is to do a few every day till there gone and just keep on top of it so theres not too many to do at once... is this what you do? :D  Thanks!!

You've got the idea little and often then she shouldn't get too fed up with having it done, also do try to remove hairs as far down as you can without causing any damage.

A little chalk powder on your fingers will help you get a better grip and it will be easier for both of you.  I always start pups off with tiny treats for allowing a few hairs to be pulled out without fuss, but you may have to be quite firm with her ;)
