I have a 13 year old collie cross who is wonderful for her age but over the last few days has developed quite a green nose (sounds gross!). She is like a child with a snotty nose, and sometimes it hardens around her nostrils and she knocks the top off and it bleeds a little.  Appart from this she is sound in health but wonder if it is hayfever or something worse - should I take her to the vets and let them give me some very expensive anti-histamine tablets?

hiya,

i didn't think dogs could get hayfever, but they can develop allergies. I found this:

http://www.ie.pedigree.com/Pedigree/en-ie/Articles/Relationship/Dog+care+tips/Pollen+Problems+for+Pooches.htm?Section=&GUID={FB855A09-2FF1-4EB4-96E2-44988D9B9CE8}&HideHeader=true  (crap at links-sorry)

i'd have thought that if the discgarge was because of an allergic reaction, the discharge would be clear, not green. Also i would have thought s/he would be pawing at the nose because of the irritation....? I would have the vet check for a fungal or bacterial infection just to make sure.

Dogs can get hayfever and you can just give piriton if hayfever has been diagnosed, I would get her to the vet if shes got a green discharge it could be a mild infection for which she will need antibiotics.

I dont know if its hayfever but every year as soon as my son's eyes are bad with hayfever our spaniel has similar trouble, when my son is okay the dog is too.
